      One of the big questions about conscience is when and where it comes into play. This question was the underlying thread to the discussions at the RIBA J 120 series discussion Collective Conscience. As the protagonists and a disputatious audience gathered at the RIBA in 66 Portland Place it was clear this debate was going to take some thrashing out. Having used his architect father to explain his own ethos of public service to society, Maxwell Hutchison, founder of Article 25 claimed ignorance of the drone (an unmanned plane of the sort currently being used in Pakistan by the US).The audience ran with this theme, Richard Woolf reiterating that ‘beautiful things can do ugly things’ and Peter Tompkins: ‘Architects are whores of the arts, we have a conscience as long as clients want it.’

          Maxwell Hutchinson is a former president of the Royal Institute of British Architects from 1989 to 1991. He is a practicing architect and regular radio and television broadcaster. He was runner-up for the BT Regional News Presenter of the Year Award, and has since been nominated for two Royal Television Society Awards. His architectural practice, ‘The Hutchinson Studio‘ are appointed as architects for significant contemporary interventions into three of London’s most significant churches. He is well known for a large portfolio of buildings throughout London. For ten years he was chairman of the Permarock Group of building Product Manufacturing companies, of which he was a founder. In between his busy broadcasting schedule, he is developing a number of historical projects for both television and publishing. He is thoroughly enjoying writing his first fictional novel covering the intriguing truth behind the 15th Century Roslyn Chapel in Scotland. Maxwell is a non-Executive Director of the Archial Group PLC, a publicly quoted company. He is also the Founder and Life President of Article 25, (formerly Architects for Aid) a charity he set up in 2004. Apart from his work, Maxwell enjoys composing music, including three stage musicals and writing a requiem mass and playing the piano and the guitar.
