ART SEEN begins the new year with a 35mm screening of BLOW UP, Michelangelo Antonioni’s classic film about a London photographer who finds himself part of a murder mystery. When the talented but bored and cocky fashion photographer Thomas takes pictures of a couple in a desolate park, he unwittingly embarks on a strange journey of captured infidelity and possible murder. Blow Up is set in the swinging mid-1960s London and it evokes all the mod style and sensibility style of the time period. Importantly through Antonioni’s own camera, the film examines the power and potential of the photographic medium during a period when its boundaries to depict reality were truly being tested. Although this is Antonioni’s first English language film, as with most of the director’s work, Blow Up shares in the lone figure faced with a problem of his/her own making, their journey marked amongst a vast landscape. BLOW UP is presented with i-D Magazine. ART SEEN is in partnership with frieze.

A frustrated war correspondent finds himself on an unexpected journey after assuming the identity of a deceased arms dealer in Michelangelo Antonioni’s THE PASSENGER. A 35mm presentation! British/American television journalist David Locke (Jack Nicholson) runs into trouble with making his documentary on post-colonial Africa after being unable to find the rebel fighters involved in Chad’s civil war. Returning to his hotel one day, he finds his new friend Robertson has passed away. Tired of his work and personal life, Locke steals Robertson’s identity for a fresh start but only to find that he was a gunrunner for the rebels. Joining up with architecture student (Maria Schneider), Locke can’t shake his journalistic tendencies as he follows appointment dates in leads from the dead man’s diary. In classic Antonioni’s style, The Passenger shows a lonely despondent figure making his/her way through an expansive landscape in search of the truth. AVENTURA ANTONIONI, the second Solar – Galeria de Arte Cinemática event scheduled for 2014, explores the relationship between cinema and contemporary artistic practices. Diatomaceous Earth is a collaboration and collision of image and audio, an unending conflict that somehow creates its own unique harmony. Much in the same way that diatomaceous earth brings healing power from the natural evolutionary erosion of our planet's sediments, so does Diatomaceous Earth present the inexorable victory of the natural state over the manufactured. The disintegration of the man-made stands in visual opposition to the enduring standard of the natural. From opening frames full of the dramatic static of trembling flora to the careful tableaus that reveal the power of each landscape, Diatomaceous Earth transports the viewer on a journey that has taken place over and over through time. Aural accompaniment focuses the eye and stimulates the imagination, drawing the conflict of the world in sharp contrast and slyly revealing the victor of this battle- Pyrrhic though it may well be. - George Gianfrancisco Music Composition by Jared Blum Production, Cinematography, and Editing by Reece Camp Carter
