My name is Andy and I’d like to tell you about a web service called ProdigyNet. ProdigyNet contains books and lessons for students. It’s a place to read the books and take the lessons and designed for mobile devices like any smart phone. The library contains publications from project Gutenberg plus a portal into Wikipedia. These publications are the kinds of things that schools cover. In fact, most literature assigned in schools is public domain. The reader helps track all your reading, and the reading assigned to you by teachers. Teachers can assign reading through the system, and it shows up instantly on a student’s reading list. In fact... a teacher can know the instant that assignment is finished. But the reader is just the beginning. ProdigyNet has a lesson builder for teachers to create interactive lessons. These are lessons that run more like a game and less like a test - knowing what mistakes you’ve made, telling you, and returning to the difficult ones until you’ve reached a higher level. Lessons are tracked too. Teachers get reports back on a student’s success in real time. Interactive lessons and reporting can turn a process that takes days on paper into one that takes only hours. Imagine the implications from a retention perspective. Imaging the implications from a cost point of view. The lessons built by teachers become public domain within ProdigyNet - so others can use them too. The result is a naturally growing and improving collection of lessons. Any teacher can assign any lesson in the system to any student. They can even use those lessons as part of a course they create. The reading and lesson assignments are tracked in real time, analyzed, and reported on in full detail. Teachers can get notifications of finished lessons, or just open a report of assigned lessons and their status. If the reporting can be automated and electronic, why not include parents... and we do. Parents can get full detailed daily reports of their kids status and progress. This can be an enormous help to teachers, and empower parents to help their kids. If they chose to, parents can even take lessons alongside their children. Sounds funny I know, but in many places illiteracy is a multi generational problem. One more thing, why mobile devices? Why not make ProdigyNet just for regular computers? A mobile device can cost between $100 and $200 and last for 4 or 5 years. That’s $20 to $50 per year. This can replace a stack of books, tonnes of photocopied notes and assignments, the need for a desk to work on, the need for shelves and copiers and replacement of books, disposal of books. The power requirement is reduced to something that can charge with a crank, or small solar charger. The devices are self-lit, and can easily be shared within families. Between the book resource, the reader, tracking and reporting, and the mobile platform - ProdigyNet intends to deliver more knowledge and more skills to more people around the world.
