October 26 and 27 @ Pershing Square - 3pm and 7pm each day. The Los Angeles Poverty Department (LAPD), a theater troupe comprised of people working and living in LA’s Skid Row, in conjunction with the Théâtre de Gennevilliers centre dramatique national de création contemporaine, France, present A (Micro) History of World Economics, Danced for a limited engagement of four outdoor performances on October 26 – 27, 2013 at the amphitheater at Pershing Square. Conceived at the height of the European economic crisis, A (Micro) History of World Economics, Danced explores our collective economic history over centuries of time. Integrating stories of a diverse range of Angelenos with 300 years of global economic history, this work explores the community impact of the financial crisis. Previously staged in Paris, Tokyo and New York’s P.S. 122, our production assembles a 50 person cast of LA downtowners, blending professional and non-professional performers, including a 15-person chorus and the musings of an economist played by artist / activist John Malpede. The play was written and directed by Pascal Rambert, artistic director for the innovative Théâtre de Gennevilliers and an artist whose theatrical works are often presented worldwide. In 2012, Rambert’s "Love's End” won the “Best New Play” award from the French Drama Critics’ Association. This project serves as part of LAPD’s larger aims to enhance the value of all of downtown’s dynamic neighborhoods through art.

Gensler teams around the globe spent the last year re-imagining the concept of a Town Square. This video documents the ideas and efforts of Gensler Los Angeles, who used Pershing Square as a case study for how to re-imagine Town Squares in every community. The LA team developed an inclusive, flexible and progressive process, a process that can be custom tailored to public spaces everywhere. During our year long research project, we challenged our own preconceptions about the role of open space. We used computational methods to devise a neutral and nimble design tool that gives equal weight to the ideas of users, citizens, designers and policy makers alike. Pershing Square lies at the confluence of diverse downtown districts. Because of it’s location Pershing Square has the opportunity to knit those diverse districts together. This key position in the city makes Pershing Square an ideal test case for our methods. Our hope is to ignite discourse on how this important historic space, and all public space, can play a role in bringing the inhabitants of a city together and improving the lives of all who pass through.
