This is what I produced for my senior thesis at CIIS, for a degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. It is an attempt explore spirituality and emotional healing in the context of protest and civil disobedience. Moreover, I wanted to examine the relationship of citizen to state with greater depth than what is commonly talked about. Are protests moments of breakthrough or breakdown in that relationship? How has taking part in an act of civil disobedience affected participants emotionally and spiritually? What came out of this effort was deeply meaningful for me personally, and I hope that viewers notice the commonality of the subjects responses. They have never actually met one another, but they use words like, "community" and "healing" with remarkable frequency, and an intention that seems to reflect a value system that truly connects them. I was so blessed to have their participation and they have my utmost gratitude...not just for appearing, but for everything they have done to be who they are.

The California Supreme Court upheld Prop. 8 by a vote of 6-1 but ruled in favor to recognize the approximately 18,000 same-sex marriages that occurred before the November election. An interfaith group of clergy members responded and led a peaceful demonstration from the courthouse steps to Van Ness St. at Grove after news of the ruling broke. At approximately 12:30p, SFPD began arresting the demonstrators, including clergy members who were released within a couple hours for good behavior. Footage by Inga Sarda-Sorensen: Following the passage of Prop. 8 in California on Nov. 4, 2008, more than 1 million people took to the streets in nationwide protests. Prop. 8 actually strips same-sex couples of the fundamental right to marry. I shot this footage at demonstrations that occurred in New York City on Nov. 12 and Nov. 15. The first demonstration was held on a Wednesday evening in Midtown Manhattan, beginning in front of the Mormon Temple near Lincoln Center and wending its way down to Columbus Circle. The second protest took place three days later at City Hall in Lower Manhattan. To take action, visit www.jointheimpact.com and www.CreatingChange.org.

All God's Children presents a political, social, and religious analysis of sexual orientation within the context of the traditional African-American values of freedom, inclusion, and the Christian love ethic. Through the voices of politicians, religious leaders, academics, family members, and activists, All God's Children vividly illustrates the human toll exacted upon society by the unspoken stigmatization and alienation of lesbians and gay men. Respected religious and political leaders, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Rev. James Forbes, Rev. Carol L. Murray, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Senator Carol Moseley-Braun, Mayor Ken Reeves, and Cornel West call for spiritual reconciliation and a commitment to equal rights and social justice for all people. Straight from the Heart explores parents' journeys to a new understanding of their lesbian and gay children by presenting simple stories about real people: a police chief who talks about how proud he is of his lesbian daughter, a Mormon couple whose son is believed to be the first gay man in Idaho to have died from AIDS, and a black woman and her two lesbian daughters who had been accused of "catching" their lesbianism from white people. This video clearly shows that prejudice against gays and lesbians is a form of bigotry inseparable from other manifestations of prejudice, particularly racism. Interviewees include PFLAG's Mitzi Henderson; Edmond L. Browning, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church; Police Chief Tom Potter; and Michael Bussee, Founder of Exodus International.
