We asked a dive operator on the Coral Coast what was the best location in Fiji, and without hesitation he said "Bligh Water" and the "Vatu-I-Ra passage". In July 2014, we went to Rakiraki, and booked into the Volivoli Resort, home of Ra Divers. Conditions were perfect, and we were able to take our pick of the best sites. Having dived Fiji before, we were surprised at the number of fish we encountered. The spectacular hard and soft corals did not disappoint, and our highlight was seeing a Sailfish! We have taken a selection of scenes to hopefully illustrate what we saw.

The fastest fish in the ocean, sailfish can reach speeds of 68 miles (110 kilometers) per hour. They are members of the billfish family, and as such, have an upper jaw that juts out well beyond their lower jaw and forms a distinctive spear. They are found near the ocean surface usually far from land feeding on schools of smaller fish like sardines and anchovies, which they often shepherd with their sails, making them easy prey. They also feast on squid and octopus. To find them in open ocean, we spend many hours looking to the sky. The fragata birds are the ones announcing their presence. Finding them is just the first step in capturing the images. Many times, they pass by so fast, leaving no chance for me to capture anything. They try to bring the fish ball to the surface and break it into smaller balls, so they can knock them out one by one. Of course, the fragata birds also take advantage of the situation. In a matter of minutes, the whole ball is gone and they go search for another one.

What's the fastest fish in the ocean? How can some fish swim at such high speed? How can they see and think fast enough to even eat at those speeds? Stanford's Steve Palumbi describes how fish adapt to be such sprinters. Taken from his book, 'The Extreme Life of the Sea' he explains just how these fish do it.
