"Mathew Zefeldt: Forms Forming Forms" on view at the Santa Monica Museum of Art is the first museum exhibition for this emerging Bay Area painter who has created an immersive, optical installation for SMMoA, rendering the gallery walls into a hallucinatory backdrop for three of his monumental still lifes. As a beacon in SMMoA’s Fall 2013 exhibition schedule, "Forms Forming Forms" invites viewers to consider the crisis of individuality in an era of instantaneous image sharing and replication. The project reflects SMMoA’s unique capacity as a kunsthalle to collaborate with contemporary artists and highlight ambitious, never-before-seen artworks and installations. "Mathew Zefeldt: Forms Forming Forms" is organized by Jeffrey Uslip, curator-at-large for the Santa Monica Museum of Art.

The Santa Monica Museum of Art will soon be the transit gateway to our vibrant city. The coming of the new Metro Expo Line at Bergamot Station from Downtown Los Angeles, and ultimately to the ocean, has officially begun. It is scheduled to open in 2016. There is now a hulking new overpass on Cloverfield and Olympic Blvds., and today (January 22, 2013) we witnessed the demolition of Track 16—a bittersweet goodbye to this local icon. Award-winning filmmakers Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (Little Miss Sunshine) document the SMMoA exhibition "Elias Sime: Eye of the Needle, Eye of the Heart." Using yarn, plastics, tattered fabric, buttons, used plastic, and bottle tops, each of the collages and stitched canvases Elias Sime creates for "Elias Sime: Eye of the Needle, Eye of the Heart" represent a complete essay about the current state of his surroundings. Sime’s three-dimensional sculptures are made with traditional organic Ethiopian building materials such as mud and straw, as well as wood, metal, and other found objects, gathered in part by neighborhood children. A highlight of the exhibition is a series of striking thrones made of leather, wood, mud and straw, which will be integrated into conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen’s final Los Angeles Philharmonic concerts staged by Sellars in mid-April. 2009.
