World Cafe visited Dublin in April 2011. The city was the first stop in our new quarterly series called Sense of Place. With this feature we hope to give you an idea of the past and present of the local music scene and some pointers for musicians or music-lovers planning a visit. Our main tour guide in Dublin was Glen Hansard, the Academy Award–winning songwriter and actor from the film Once and the leader of Irish group The Frames. And we were also joined by Niall Stokes, editor of Hot Press, a biweekly music magazine that is the Irish equivalent of Rolling Stone, and Conor O’Brien of the up and coming Irish band Villagers. Hope you enjoy this virtual tour of a vibrant musical city!

¿Tacos or Tacos?" (2011) is a 15 minute film about the emergence of new food cultures of Austin and how they are shaping community identity in the city. Through juxtaposing immigrant taco trucks on the East side of Austin to the new trendy food trucks in the eclectic and eccentric neighborhood of South Austin, the film elucidates that taco trucks are more than just a place to eat for Mexican immigrants.

This was a piece I created for the Bahle family of Suttons Bay, MI. It's the story of Owen Bahle, a descendant of Norwegian immigrants who braved the waters of the Atlantic and carved out a new life in the harsh surroundings of northern Michigan. Owen is filled with a deep sense of pride in his family's history and their involvement in the growing a ragged pioneer community into a prosperous small town. A nice little bit of Americana.

Project page: http://PlaceAndPipelines.org The proposed Northern Gateway Pipeline project is a polarizing topic in Canadian politics. The project will construct a dual pipeline connecting, Alberta’s Industrial Heartland region with a marine port on the coast of British Columbia. This will allow petroleum companies to ship dilute bitumen from Alberta’s tar sands to Asian Markets. Many residents who live along the proposed pipeline and tanker routes are concerned about the risk to the environment, their livelihoods, and their culture. This video uses images from my own journey through the landscape of the Northern Gateway project to connect the viewer with this region of western Canada. Quotes from statements made by local residents before a Joint Review Panel, as part of the Environmental Assessment process, are used to show how residents connect with the places they call home. The journey starts in Bruderheim, Alberta (just east of Edmonton) and follows the proposed pipeline route out to the coastal town of Kitimat, British Columbia. We then continue on to the islands of Haida Gwaii to include areas potentially impacted by tanker traffic. It is my hope that this video will help to educate people about this proposed project, the region, and its inhabitants, and gain a better understanding of what is at risk. For more information, go to the Place and Pipelines project web page. http://www.lifeandlandscape.ca/place-pipelines/ The amazing soundtrack was put together by James Elser https://www.facebook.com/jamelser
