My continuing exploration of Penwith’s promontory and its inescapable history. The more I look the older the land seems; surrounded by the tireless atlantic which at times comes alive with a sense of that past. Two Cornish words, penn meaning 'headland' and wydh meaning 'at the end'. Made in Penwith http://www.grahamgaunt.com/

World Cafe visited Dublin in April 2011. The city was the first stop in our new quarterly series called Sense of Place. With this feature we hope to give you an idea of the past and present of the local music scene and some pointers for musicians or music-lovers planning a visit. Our main tour guide in Dublin was Glen Hansard, the Academy Award–winning songwriter and actor from the film Once and the leader of Irish group The Frames. And we were also joined by Niall Stokes, editor of Hot Press, a biweekly music magazine that is the Irish equivalent of Rolling Stone, and Conor O’Brien of the up and coming Irish band Villagers. Hope you enjoy this virtual tour of a vibrant musical city!

"Out of Place" is a short experimental documentary I produced during the first semester of my MFA program at the University of North Texas. The film asks the question, "what does it mean to have a sense of place?" It contemplates the meaning of localism, cross country relocations, and the nature of a society that pushes families and friends to the opposite ends of the poles. The film also showcases my own anxiety, and exhaustion, with the whole process of moving. In producing "Out of Place" I learned how to work on an extremely tight schedule (the film was shot and edited in about 8 weeks), grappled with the difficulty of narration (more difficult to do than it seems), and tried to explore the personal without being too self-absorbed. I hope the the film strikes a chord with those who live far from their families, friends, and the place they call "home."

THE TERRITORY is what writers, composers and other storytellers who call this place home have in common. In wine culture it’s called “terroir”– that mix of dirt, rain, sun, wind and water that makes one vineyard’s grapes taste different from another’s. My Territory is a suite in nine movements, inspired by the idea that topography and watershed, cycles of eruption, erosion, flood and drought, along with human stories of hope, disaster, courage, profligacy, promise and betrayal create a vibration-an ethos even-that is real. It rises from the land itself and connects native and transplant alike.

Located in the French Quarter, just three blocks from the Mississippi River. On any given night, the hall is filled to capacity with people eager to hear New Orleans jazz played by veteran musicians in their 70's and 80's and younger musicians learning and embracing music that is both sweet and very beautiful.
