The Saturday of X Games is really the pinnacle of winter here in one of the worlds great ski towns. With events happening on the hill and in town all day and night long, it is good to take morning hot laps and keep perspective of why all of this pomp exists - the sheer joy of sliding down a mountain. Aspen Times mountain correspondent Corby Anderson takes a run from the top of Buttermilk's Summit Express to test the snow, and checks out the bustling base for a peek of the X Games on Saturday morning.

Aspen Mountain's quiet lifeblood lift, Shadow Mountain is better known to most locals as 1A. After a few weeks of mechanical decommision, the old gal is spinning again. This is much to the joy of Aspen Times mountain correspondent Corby Anderson, who revels in the solitude and calm pace of heading up the "west side."

Aspen is fortunate to host some of the biggest, funnest events on snow over the course of the winter, but it is pretty hard to top Gay Ski Week's "Drag Race" for sheer spectacle and hilarity. Aspen Times mountain sports correspondent Corby Anderson files this report from Aspen's Gondola Plaza, where MC Miss Richfield 1981 is holding court.
