Daniel Grossman, 2012. 3”// HD Video With Sound. By reconstructing found footage from a NASA space shuttle launch into a set of anamorphic images, Misère suggests a second look on this extreme event. Using mirroring and time effects, it appropriates the heavy, industrial structures of the space shuttle into choreographed-sculptures. The image floats, folds and unfolds in the void of dark space. With the NASA’s latest announcement of the shut down of the space shuttle program, the piece invites the viewer to meditate on the ecstatic-cinematic qualities of space shuttle launch events. This event, from its very abstract idea to its finalized outcome as a filmed “show”, provokes the anxieties and excitement that we usually encounter in existential- ungraspable religious, and sexual experiences. By using a narrow-red color spectrum, Misère looks at the space shuttle as a living organism; ejaculating liquid, smoke and fire. The shuttle appears to be erecting and shrinking in the journey to penetrate the unknown. The sound composition appropriated from 16th century composer Thomas Tallis, is a four-times slowed down version of his choral piece ‘Miserere’ (Lord have mercy upon us). Due to the slowing-down process, applied by digital algorithm, the voices singing the Latin hymn are extremely pitched down. While preserving some pronunciation elements, some interesting digital sonic artifacts are revealed. The choir sings the spiritual glorification of the god-like man who succeeded to overcome the obstacles of nature, the erection, vitality and productivity. But the low-pitched voices suggest also something different, singing as if from the holes in the space machinery. They sing the cries of the machine, its heaviness, the doubt of its existence. Just as human kind is transformed, and wrapped itself with tons of heavy metal machinery, the choir voices are transposed, droning through artificial digital sounds. The bowed like clusters of sound creates a meditative yet tense layer of sound, allowing a steady ground for the kinetic video structures. The video plays in loop, allowing the viewer to draw in an out of it at any given time, giving space for contemplation on this monumental event.
