Abbotsford, near Melrose in the Scottish Borders, is the former home of Sir Walter Scott and one of Scotland’s great cultural sites. This historic building has enjoyed £11.4 million investment in recent years, enabling restoration of the house and an upgrade to modern facilities. A significant part of the renovation was an impressive new visitor centre with state of the art exhibition space. Alongside priceless antiques and artwork from the house, the building houses a number of video and interactive pieces. Collaborating with Freakworks of Edinburgh, I had a key role in the design and development of 3 interactive touchscreen exhibition pieces. The interactives were built using Actionscript and Adobe Air, and installed onto 24” Android tablets. Visitor feedback is important to the visitor centre at Abbotsford, and they were keen to gather this data in a rich and engaging way. Visitors are taken through a series of questions to gauge their reaction to the exhibition, and profile their demographic. After offering an opinion, users are invited to investigate the trends of previous visitors through a live infographic. Data is saved onto the system and regularly backed up using wireless technology.
