Pollen of the Great Lakes is a series of four canvases illustrating the biodiversity and intricate beauty of tree pollen found in the Great Lakes region. Each grain of pollen was hard carved and printed with ink, then heat embossed with various powders and glitters. Van Zalen is especially interested in the intricate detail and three-dimensional aspects of the pollen grains. Though invisible to the naked eye, these microscopic pollen grains surround us.

i've been to the grand rapids museum four times during the past 10 days of artprize... to see a wide array of impressive work.. (intersections and colossus, my favorites) however i've been most riveted by the dedicated 'side show/performance' of erica karmeisool greeting viewers to her husband's exhibit. yes, his work is solid -- go see it -- specially the opening mural which in my opinion tells the whole story.. but her tireless effort on his behalf; hour after hour, after hour... blows me away...! I'm sure she takes a break every now and then, but not during my visits..) i nominate erica, for the first artprize 'energizer' award -- and only wish i had someone like her to sing my praise :-)

Artist bio: Pete Ohs is an Emmy-award winning director, editor and videographer - an acclaimed indie music video director with over 7 million views generated on Youtube. With a degree in Computer Science, his path led to five years professionally editing television whilst independently producing and directing music videos – he traveled all around the United States and Europe as a documentarian – his work has appeared on MTV2, MTVu, VH1, NBC, and MSNBC – he now collaborates with his wife and creative partner Andrea Sisson – establishing the company Lauren Edward. Together, they will complete their first feature film in September 2011. About the work: Title: “When I’m With You” By Best Coast Art form: Film / Video, Sound Medium: Video Year created: 2010 Description of work: The video was conceived in a single image – Beth and Ronald McDonald riding a tandem bicycle on the beach. Then I thought it’d be fun to have Ronald making Beth a hamburger. Then I thought it’d be fun to have Ronald buying In ‘N Out. It’s a fun video for a fun song. But the artistic and societal statement made in the video goes much further than fast food and California iconography. It is about brands and intellectual property. We did not receive permission from McDonald’s. They are not affiliated with this video whatsoever. But that is irrelevant. I assumed ownership of Ronald McDonald when I got my first Happy Meal over 20 years ago. He’s been with me ever since. He belongs to everyone. He is ours to use. In today’s culture, the Internet has connected everyone and everything. With crashing economies, financial meltdowns, and worldwide recessions, the ‘value’ of logos and mascots has gone out the window. ‘Value’ now resides in the freedom of the individual to create
