Wendy Wersch Memorial Lecture Portraiture and Other Discarded Themes Women in Art: an Illustrated Lecture from a Place of Experience A little local history, a little sociology, a little Lacanian psychotherapy, a little stetl tribute. Bodies inside and out! Join Amy Karlinsky as she brings her eclectic style to a discussion of lived experience in the arts. She will blend contexts as a woman, art student, critic, historian, curator, administrator, teacher and mentor. This illustrated lecture will feature dozens of transformative works of art by local women exploring fashion, goddesses, representation, domesticity and mimicry. Artists and art lovers can come together, be inspired and discuss the importance of art in the lives of women and communities. Karlinsky’s gift for putting large ideas into context has shone in over a hundred articles on the visual arts. She was also an Instructor at the School of Art for nine years and has facilitated numerous discussions on the arts for provincial and local associations. Karlinsky curated Figure Ground (2005) Head Space (2008), Linus Woods and Red Green Show. She is a Board member of the Manitoba Arts Council and a former Chair of MAWA . This is the third video in the trilogy Silence, Sound, and Song. Statement: To err is to be human. We all make mistakes in life, forget where we are, and get lost in our environment. Our sense of self can be jeopardized, and we don’t know how to relieve our souls from what we put our bodies through. It is important to remember where you came from and where you’re going. Our perceptions of ourselves may become skewed at times, and we may forget why we should strive for anything. But to move on, we must reflect on who we are, what we have accomplished, and how we have grown. We are supposed to worry, and fear, and love and hate and emote, because it allows us the recognition that we’re living. My video pieces examine my personal struggles within these past two years, and how I almost lost something very precious to me: music. Spending a traumatizing freshman year at music school before I came here almost deteriorated my love for music, and therefore an enormous part of my identity. I felt lost, powerless, and scared. Since coming here I have redefined myself and have been able to confront the issues that stole my passion and channel them into pieces that speak with silence, sound, and song.

A video exploring the dual narratives contained in progressive folk rock from the 70's and its simultaneous implications of both an Americanised 20th century notion of passing through a landscape in a car juxtaposed with the instrumental allusion to Medieval England and a purer, authentic relationship with the landscape
