The last day of my one a day photo-film project. I've taken well over 5000 photos this week and had to edit and render them as well as make the music and soundtracks. The time limit is a killer. You can't get to 6pm and think, "this is no good, I need to start again". It's been ball crushingly difficult everyday. Hopefully the lessons I have learned from this will become apparent over the next few days when I shall not be taking any photographs or sitting at my computer. But I already know it was worth the effort. I have tried some new things. Some worked out, some didn't. I've annoyed a few people by sending daily "share" emails this week, and for that I am truly sorry. I have neglected the kittens and the allotment .....and drank too much coffee and freaked a few people out with my camera antics. I have really enjoyed doing it and feel much clearer in my mind than when I started. Thanks to everyone who watched and commented on my films. Im going to have a lay down.

Before our favourite smartphones, tablets, taxi apps and online stores there was the humble banana. This remarkable true story of a Cold War coup warns us that no matter how cheap and convenient our stuff is, there is always a price to pay. [Warning: contains some images that you might find disturbing] The title Bananas, Sardines and Sharks is a reference to The Shark and the Sardines, one of the first accounts written about the Guatemalan coup, by Jacobo Arbenz's predecessor Juan José Avéralo, and the first to accuse the American government of being involved. DELVE DEEPER There are some great books you can read to find out more about United Fruit, Operation Success and even just the humble banana itself. Bananas: How the United Fruit Company Shaped the World by Peter Chapman is an entertainingly written primer on United Fruit and their influence. http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?_encoding=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&field-keywords=banana%20chapman&linkCode=ur2&tag=adammeetsworl-21&url=search-alias%3Dstripbooks&linkId=23R45KFI4RMX2V2X Banana: The Fruit that Changed the World by Dan Koeppel covers the same ground but also talks about the banana itself in more depth. There were so many interesting facts about bananas that we had to leave out of this essay, and Dan talks about them plus the disease that threatens to make the banana extinct. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/0452290082/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=0452290082&linkCode=as2&tag=adammeetsworl-21&linkId=WUXE65XFDJPYJGWY Bitter Fruit: the Story of an American Coup in Guatemala by Stephen Schlesinger is a gripping account of the coup in Guatemala itself. It covers Operation Success from both sides in great detail. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/067401930X/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1634&creative=19450&creativeASIN=067401930X&linkCode=as2&tag=adammeetsworl-21&linkId=CDMINAKHH5EJOAUI After several more scandals United Fruit eventually underwent a huge rebrand and is now known to the world as Chiquita. They are relatively open about the actions of the old corporation. The United Fruit Historical Society is keeping a public record of the old company's history. == CREDITS Story Design and Direction: Adam Westbrook • Story Assistance from Guy Gunaratne, Caroline Vanier, Cody Delistraty, David Baboulene and Chris Oatley • Stock footage: Videohive • Music: AudioJungle featuring "Someone Else's Memories" by Revolution Void • Sound Effects: AudioJungle and Freesound. http://www.facebook.com/voiceofamountain The film focuses on life after a 36 year war in Guatemala. We follow a coffee farming community, Santa Anita, consisting of ex-combatants who now harvest organic coffee. Members of the community share their story, from decades of fighting in a civil war to the new challenges of peacefully harvesting coffee and bananas. The film will include members of the community talking about the circumstances that led them to fight against their government and what they hoped the war would accomplish. We would also like to use this film as a teaching tool within Guatemala. More than half the population in Guatemala today is uninformed about the 36 year civil war. We have learned that people living in the rural parts of the country simply don't know their history. Plans are already in motion to host screenings of the film throughout these areas in their native Mayan languages. The Mayan population is the majority in Guatemala and their education is crucial to the continuing development of the country as a whole. Dir. There are many interesting and odd things to be found on the shores of the dying Salton Sea in southern California but maybe one of the most unique is the International Banana Museum. Recently transplanted from Culver City, the museum occupies a squat building on the side of the Highway 111 in Mecca, CA, a relatively short drive south from Palm Springs. Housing the largest collection of banana paraphernalia in the world, the museum is a fascinating catalog of all the different ways the iconic fruit can take shape. For our latest video we stopped in and spoke to Fred "Banana Mon" Garbutt, who owns the collection and curates this curious collection. See more of our videos at coolhunting.com/video
