Most discussions begin with some issue in society and that usually involves politics. Many people think that we should keep religion out of politics. But is that possible? First we need to define "religion." Religion is simply a collection of beliefs. Everyone has a religion: a group of beliefs that determines their conduct. Each person's belief system is unique, although it may closely align with some "established" religion. A person's religion may or may not include God. Atheism is just as much a religion as Christianity. Now, what is "politics?" Politics is a discussion about beliefs taht affect social conduct. EVERY law is based on one belief on an issue to the exclusion of all other beliefs on that issue. It is just a matter of which (or whose) belief will determine the policy. For example, take a "non-religious" issue like setting a speed limit. Some want a higher limit to help trafic flow. Others want it lower for safety. Ask several people and you will get several beliefs about what the correct limit should be. But once the law is passed, it will be based on only one of those beliefs and the others are no longer free to be practiced. Notice that various beliefs are based on the relative values people have about safety, efficiency, etc. Thus values or basic beliefs do enter into political views. Therefore, to say that "religion" must be kept out of politics is physically impossible. What others are really saying is, "You keep your religion (beliefs) out while I bring mine in." When people bring up some issue, our job is to ask questions that explore their underlying beliefs and then see if those beliefs have a solid foundation/ Likewise, we should be able to support our beliefs with a solid foundation and that foundation should be the Bible. Today's lesson will be instructional and give us some tools as we "Engage Thoughtfully" with people.
