In 2008, I walked through China - one year, more than 4500km. All the while, I let my hair and my beard grow. This is the resulting video. Add me on FB: http://www.facebook.com/crehage Or drop by on my blog: http://www.thelongestway.com Additional info: - I never finished my original goal of walking to Germany. Instead, I walked for a year and roughly 4500km, passed the Gobi desert, and then decided to stop walking for now. - All of the distance from Beijing to Ürümqi was completed solely on foot, straight good old walking. There are instances where you can see me in the video sitting on a plane or riding a boat, but those are during breaks I had to take from walking, either to sort out bureaucracy issues or to take care of some personal things. - I had been planning this trip for over a year before I even started, and getting as far as I got was an experience for which I am very grateful. - Obtaining the necessary visa for a trip like this was not very easy, hence I had to go back to Beijing a few times to resolve some issues. - This is not a strict "1 pic a day" video, because I wanted to make it a bit more alive by adding some additional movement. Sometimes during the film you would follow me turn around, or something would happen in the background. I tried to capture these moments to make the video more interesting. - If you liked the music I used in this video, get it here: The Kingpins - "L'Aventurier" http://bit.ly/RXOMaz Zhu Fengbo - "Olive Tree" http://bit.ly/UDsHT7 - The core of this project is in actually my blog where I have posted my extensive travel diary, starting from day 1 (Nov 9th 2007) and describing every single day until the end one year later. Video filmed by Guardian photographer Dan Chung entirely on a production Canon EOS5DmkII and adapted Nikon and Zeiss lenses using manual focus. The camera was purchased to use solely as a video camera with existing Nikon kit. The film was shot an edited in about twelve hours directly after picking the camera up from a Beijing camera store and charging the battery. Lenses used are: Nikon 17-35 f2.8 Nikon 80-200 f.8 Nikon 85mm f2.8 shift lens Nikon 16mm f2.8 fisheye Zeiss/Contax 85mm f1.4 The camera was set to neutral picture style, sharpness all the way down and contrast at -2. Saturation was left alone. Edited in Final Cut Pro, the footage was all converted to Apple Prores 422 using MPEG Streamclip because there were problems using the native H.264 Mpeg files. It was exported as a QT at 720p. There was no grading, exposure or colour correction on this footage. For a comparison you can see a Nikon D90 low light test video here http://vimeo.com/1728575 See www.guardian.co.uk/profile/danchung for more of Dan Chung's work. So here is my first attempt at filming with a production Canon Eos7D just one hour after receiving it from my local camera store. Starting at 10pm I spent about 2 hours in total filming this an the Nanluoguxiang Hutong in Beijing which is popular with locals and tourists alike. Due to the lack of light its shot mostly at around 1600 to 6400 ISO. Lenses were the Canon 50mm f1.2L, 35mm f1.4L and the 70-200mm f4L IS. I attached my Zacuto Z-finder straight to the camera, then added a prototype of the new Genus d-slr bars supporting their wide angle mattebox to prevent any excess lens flare. I shot mostly handheld using a small Redrockmicro shoulder rig at times as well as on my fantastic Miller DS-20 tripod. Audio was from a Zoom H4n feeding the camera audio directly using a custom cable from Pinknoise systems (living with AGC to speed time in the edit). For more detail go to www.dslrnewsshooter.com

Moments in China is a collection of vivid moments I experienced while traveling around China last month. The piece flows from Hong Kong to Beijing, and visits Guilin, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. Some moments are more significant than others, but I have a personal connection with each. The video is particularly special to me because I have not had time for personal projects over the past several months. However, that is not to say that the past several months have not been exciting. I have had the chance to work on some interesting projects such as the Luminato Festival which aired on TV and at major theatres across Ontario, sequences for the Toronto Blue Jays, a set of commercials for Niagara Tourism, and promotional material for Toronto Tourism. I am also pleased to announce that I will be putting together Toronto Tourism's newest video aimed at garnering international interest for Toronto. I intend to take a unique approach. Thank you to Trevor Corrigan for creating the title; and my family, Jon B, Martin L, Henry Less, Derek Flack and Bryan Brock for various reasons. www.xenondesigns.net Three minutes of video for three weeks of travel, three countries, three cultures (and three tee-shirts in my backpack !) ; I took a train ticket for the Trans-Siberian railway, in order to reach Beijing from Moscow, crossing Mongolia.
