Rapa das bestas 2010 - Primeira parte Shot and edited by Jorge Cosmen Music by Arvo Pärt (Cantus in memory of Benjamin Britten) www.lesfilmsanonymes.org One of the most spectacular traditions of Europe takes place each summer in several small villages of Galicia. Hundreds of wild horses are brought down from the mountains where they live the whole year to cut their hair and to be marked. After that, they are released again. In the small village of Sabucedo this task is made hand-to-hand by the "aloitadores" immobilizing the animal without ropes, sticks or equipment. The tradition possibly comes from pre-Roman ages. The story goes that in a devastating famine year the villagers offered the horses to a saint. Since then the horses graze at freedom and only are brought down from the mountain once a year to cut the hair of their manes and tails and treat them from parasites. Unlike some people think, this is a tradition about love for the horses and communion with nature.

Don't read on if you don't want to know the ending! Angus rides through the forest, dismounts and approaches the castle where his beloved, Rhona, lives. Appearing on the balcony, she throws him a letter breaking the news that she is compelled to marry a rich relative. The weeping lovers try to reach each other, but Rhona is pulled away from the balcony by her father, the Laird. Angus pleads with him, but the Laird throws a chair in his direction, and has to be restrained by Rhona. Angus sits by a mist-shrouded lake, and broods. Three ethereal fairy-creatures approach him and conjure up another from a flower. She hesitantly steps out from amongst the petals and hands Angus an elaborately decorated casket. The four 'wee folk' drift away. Energised, Angus mounts his horse and rides back to town, leaping from crag to crag. Outside the church, the Laird drags a reluctant Rhona to his kinsman, who is waiting at the entrance. Angus rides up to them, dismounts and hands the Laird the casket. Inside is a Post Office Savings Bank book. Thrilled, the Laird hugs Angus and permits him to marry Rhona.
