      • Wells Around the World - Philippines

from Darrell & Shannon Nelson / Added

On April 10th we took the long journey to Bohol, which consisted of a flight to Cebu, a boat ride to Bohol and a long drive to Santo Nino Bohol where we installed 60 biosand filters through the “ Wells around the World Project” sponsored by the Evergreen Baptist Church from San Gabriel Valley California. What a blessing it was for us to be apart of this project in helping communities have the opportunity to have safe, clean drinking water. We were blessed to have met with Pastor Victor Chen the outreach Pastor of Evergreen SGV Church along with Emie (Pastor Rudy’s daughter) and Gerry Morita who made the long trip here to participate in the distribution and turn over of this project. http://www.evergreensgv.org/

The paradigm water project is building biosand water filters and adressing other aspects of clean drinking water access in Lombok, Indonesia. By engaging local leaders and training community health professionals to address issues of sanitation in their home villages, the filters we distribute find happy homes, providing a family of 10 with clean drinking water for decades. Funds from Paradigm employ people from Lombok to build the Biosand water filters, as well as training to provide education to those receiving them in their use and maintenance. We make return visits to recipient households after intervals of one month, six months, and one year to check that they are being used and maintained properly, and to test the water being filtered for coliform and other microbial contaminants. In addition to bringing Biosand water filters to villages, we also plan on assessing how toilet blocks and wells may be dug and installed in order to address other facets of improved sanitation. The reason drinking water becomes contaminated is often from villagers defecating in fields in proximity to wells and water sources. By installing toilets with proper waste disposal, we eliminate the problem of water becoming contaminated in the first place. By digging wells, villages which suffer through Lombok's long dry season have better access to water as well. This short video shows the process after the biosand water filter is already cast. Skim coating, sanding, painting and what one looks like co-branded with Rotary/BSF. We also show our manufacturing building at the end. We are raising funds to complete the building so our team can work even when its raining. A roof will also provide shade which is great for the staff.
