East Africa is to the wildlife photographer as Florence is to the artist. Place names like Masai Mara, Amboseli, Mount Kilimanjaro, Serengeti, and Ngorongoro Crater conjure up visions of “iconic photography” for any nature or wildlife photographer. Every frame was shot on location during this extraordinary photographic safari - testimony to the superb planning of the itinerary and the high quality of the photography experienced by participants in the tour. It does not get any better than this. This film was commissioned by Iconic Images International and its African on-ground operators, C4 Images & Safaris and produced by Untitled Film Works”. The Black Rhino, one of the rarest mammals on earth, finds it’s last free-ranging stronghold in the Namib Desert of Namibia. It is estimated that only 180 rhinos live on this 31,000 square mile desert. M. Sanjayan, Lead Science for The Nature Conservancy and host of several Discovery Channel television specials, takes us on an amazing expedition through this spectacular and rich desert. Sanjayan and I spent almost three weeks traveling the Northern Namib in search of just one of these magnificent creatures.

August 26th 2013 Lewa Conservancy moved 11 critically endangered black rhinos to its neighbouring Borana Conservancy in one of Lewa's biggest translocations yet. The translocation decongested Lewa's rhino population and reintroduce black rhinos to Borana Conservancy, an area they last inhabited in the 1970s. Also involved were the Kenya Wildlife Service, the state corporation mandated to conserve and manage Kenya's wildlife. Given the fact that rhinos are facing the greatest threat in history from poaching, this is a positive story in the midst of bad news. Borana's pledge to conservation will see black rhinos introduced to an area they last inhabited decades ago. This is a commitment which few others are willing to take on, given the cost and security risk associated with holding rhinos today. This translocation was also a big celebration of Lewa's success as a rhino sanctuary. Years of conservation efforts have seen Lewa reach its maximum black rhino carrying capacity and the Conservancy is now able to restock areas that previously held this endangered species. Filmed on location at Lewa and Borana Conservancy by Mark Muinde & Teeku Patel of Sokomoto Images.
