Fantastic, wild and impressively detailed, Rainforest Masks of Costa Rica, a popular Selby Gardens event, will return March 8-April 19 to the Museum of Botany and the Arts. The opening reception, Thursday, March 7, 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm, will be the first opportunity to purchase one of these impressive masks. Each year, visitors are captivated by the incredible imagination and brilliant colors contained in the hand carved, meticulously painted masks the Borucan artists make with only the most basic of tools. The walls of Selby Gardens' Mansion will be lined with more than 200 of the fanciful creations fashioned from 100% sustainable native wood. The Borucan people take pride in their tradition which has been passed down from generation to generation for centuries. Originally designed to intimidate invading Spanish Conquistadors by representing the Devil, the traditional masks are referred to as “Diablitos” or “Little Devils.” The masks are highly collectible ecological artwork, renowned not only for their impressive craftsmanship but also for their ability to symbolically capture the Borucans' affinity for and interdependence with their surrounding environment. Their concern for the endangered plants and animals of the rainforests where they live is clearly evident in the extraordinarily ornate masks. The artwork’s popularity is growing – come marvel at this spectacular exhibit to see why!
