    **To all those affected by the earthquake and tsunami. You are in our thoughts and prayers. We wish for the safety of you all.** Japan is one of the most beautiful countries in the world. This is my Japan. This is one of the many reasons why I love Japan. I shot this in many locations around Japan in the summer of 2009. Some of the location include Tokyo, Matsuyama, Imabari, Nagano, Gifu, and Ishizushisan. I started this as a personal project to try and capture the beauty that I see in Japan. It started as just that... But now that I have finished, I see it only as a beginning.       I first became aware of Michael Levin's photographs in 2010. His photographs of everyday places and common subjects are transformed into something much more when he views them through his lens...absolutely stunning! Being that a large majority of Michael's work is done in Japan, I instantly had a connection to it as I too have a bond with Japan and have traveled and documented the landscape extensively in my own way. After watching my film Hayaku (http://vimeo.com/12112529) Michael contacted me regarding a project he was working on and felt it might be of interest to me. He told me that he really appreciated my work and recognized the dedication and effort that went into it. I agreed to go on a trip with him to Japan and work on his project. But for me, there was a greater opportunity at hand. We had several conversations and I gave him some ideas about expanding the project and he really took to it. A month later and we were in Japan having beers and sushi. I wanted to document Michael at work, in Japan, in a way that hasn't really been explored with photographers. I told Michael of my idea to make an artistic representation of his experiences in the Land of the Rising Sun - to show him in his working environment in a way that complimented his work. Not to explain it with words, but to feel it through the flow of the film. I wanted to show the process, the journey, the adventure in a way that would give the viewer an emotional connection to Michael and his photography. The final result is something that I think is truly original… something that showcases who Michael is, and more importantly, what his work is all about. This film is a collaboration between Michael and I and our love for photography, film, Japan and adventure. This is a subject that Michael and I are continuing to explore as we plan more trips together, more films and more adventures. Perhaps we will re-engineer ourselves, integrating man and machine. Deus ex homine (deus?). Brad Kremer and Stewart Mayer of camBLOCK flew out for three days of shooting at the end of March. It rained the entire time they were in town so we were confined to interiors, which turned out to be a bit of a blessing in disguise since those shots turned out to be some of the more impressive ones in 3D. After the weather cleared, I shot for an additional nine days around San Francisco with assistance from Simon Christen, Noah Hawthorne, Christopher Fuzi, Robert Mooring, Josh Golz, and Paul Leeming. Canon 5D Mark II's were used in both parallel and beamsplitter configurations for true, native stereo capture at 5.6K resolution RAW. The camBLOCK and Dynamic Perception were used for motion control. There were some major technical hurdles with both capture and post, but once we saw the results in 3D, it was well worth it. As summer coms to an end and Autumn begins, kids go back to school and dream of warm days filled with laughter and joy. This short film is a reflection of that dream.             The winter of 2006/2007 I made a film called Picture This. Prior to 2006 most high end snowboard films were shot on 16mm mainly because of the great latitude of film and the lack of a good video camera in extreme conditions. In 2006 Panasonic released the HVX-200. We did many comparison tests between 16mm, the HVX-200 and other camcorders. The HVX-200 convinced us that it was time for a change. This section was my first "production" style shoot with the HVX-200. I had just returned from Finland where I was using the camera with Jaakko Itaaho and the crew. Getting used to the camera and feeling it out. Now here I was in Tahoe at Northstar filming with Shaun White and Kevin Pearce. I wanted to take advantage of the low light capabilities of the camera so I told Shaun and Kevin that I wanted to shoot the segment solely at night. They were fully in to it. True professionals. We shot it over the course of 4 nights. It was mid winter and very cold. It was one of the harder shoots that I had done, as were most in Picture This, because I wanted every shot to be lit very specifically. I wanted to control each and every shot. That wasn't something that was done much back then in snowboarding. But everyone worked hard lugging the lights up, down, up and down the pipe night after night.                 I went to Nike with an idea. The idea started as a way to showcase multiple athletes in different sports using tilt shift time lapse photography and composting. After talking with Nike about what they were looking for we decided to narrow it down to one sport and one athlete. In comes Laura Hadar and snowboarding. We had a general storyboard to follow. But as the piece was so complex visually we had to sort of just shoot and see what we got almost. And boy did we get a lot. It took weeks to organize the footage and to find a path. To connect one shot with another and then another until we finally had a rough sketch of a final story. Once all the footage was shot and logged we only needed one final group of shots to complete the piece. The snowboarding. Unfortunately Laura was injured at the end of the season and we had to postpone the final shoot. This actually may have been a blessing in disguise. It gave us the opportunity to really dig in and refine the look and feel of the piece. What we ended up with is something that we are very proud of. Something fresh and new. Something exciting.                 • Saijo Matsuri 2009 西条祭り

                  Saijo Matsuri is a festival held every year in October in Saijo, Japan. It is truly one of the most exciting, energetic experiences I have ever witnessed. I have been to the festival about 5 times and have always wanted to capture the energy and mood of the event. But I never had a way of getting "in" it the way I wanted and to have the quality that I was seeking that could showcase it in a way that comes close to actually being there. This year was different. For the first time, with the 5D Mark II, it was possible to get right up close and personal to the event and have it be amazingly crisp 1080p quality. I do not think a film like this would have been possible anytime before with any other camera. Especially considering that it was done solo. One person, with one camera. This is one of the many reasons that I am so hooked on the 5D Mark II right now. The ability to get into tight places, amazing low light capabilities and great HD quality. A little background about the festival: Saijo Matsuri is a three day event celebrating the fall harvest. They carry 135 of these 700kg(1500lbs) Danjiri all over town and parade them in a very enthusiastic fashion. And when I say "all over town" I mean ALL OVER TOWN. They will all be in one spot for 4-5 hours and then carry it to the next 10-20km away to the next spot and continue the fun. And they do this, almost non-stop, day and night for three days. They lift these Danjiri up over their heads and present them to the Kami(God). Sometimes when they get a good bounce going the Danjiri will actually lift away from their grip several centimeters in the air and hopefully they catch them again. And then there are 7 larger Mikoshi that come from a neighboring town, Niihama, to join in the festivities. These larger ones weigh a tremendous 2.5 tons. This film focuses on the second day, Oct. 17th. It starts at 1am, goes to three locations and ends around 8pm. I suggest watching with good speakers or headphones to get the full effect of being immersed into this amazing event. Enjoy! *Now available for download*

                    This is a video section that I directed and shot for Wille Yli-Luoma. Wille is a good friend and one of my favorite snowboarders. He is full of life and adventure. It was always exciting to go on a trip and explore with him. This particular year for my film Picture This we had a few new things that we wanted to accomplish. One of which was a night powder section. And Wille was up for the challenge. On a trip to Cooke City, MT we stopped in bozeman and loaded up with supplies. There are usually plenty of down days in Cooke City due to the weather. But this time we wanted to make use of them. The first five days were socked in with white out conditions that make it difficult to see anything in the day. But as luck would have it it seemed to clear up every night. So we slept in the day and snowboarded at night. Most of these locations are 10+ miles out in the back-country. The only way to access them is with snowmobiles. Leaving our cabin at 5pm and getting back around 4am. Dragging all the lights, generators, dollies and cameras without breaking them every night was a challenge to say the least. Add to that temperatures that were averaging -25 Celsius and you can imagine just how difficult it was. To this day I think it still might have been the hardest shoot I have done. All that and it was just for Wille's intro. But all that aside... It was a blast! As for the rest of the section it showcases Wille doing what he does best... Snowboarding! Hope you enjoy!                       For last years Burton movie, more specifically for Jeremy Jones' section we decided to get some shots of Jeremy on his Harley. This is some of the extra footage we got the first day. We shot it all on the Canon 5DMKII. It was a lot of fun mounting it all over the bike. And a little scary at times as well. At one point Jeremy make a right hand turn just a bit too hard and scraped the camera on the pavement at 30+ MPH. Luckily the damage was only superficial. Tough little camera!
