In the fall of 2001 we were asked to plan the 2002 Black History Month celebration for the city of Sierra Vista, Arizona. The city, located on then border with Mexico, has its origin in the civilian settlement next to historic Ft. Huachuca; once the home of the black troops known as the Buffalo Soldiers. This is the story of our two year effort to expand the traditional one day celebration consisting of a speaker, gospel singing and soul food into a month long celebration of African-American culture.

The Funerals of Boswain's Mate Johnnie Franklin Callahan, Specialist Six James William Dunn and Corporal Isaiah Mays were conducted at Arlington National Cemetery May 29, 2009. It was an honor to be a part of this event. On February 15, 1890 Corporal Isaiah Mays was awarded the Medal of Honor. He laid in an unmarked grave in Phoenix, Arizona until members of the Old Guard Riders and the Missing In America project found him. The state legislature granted the Old Guard Riders next of kin status and the three gentlemen were escorted across the country to Arlington where they were finally laid to rest with the honors they so richly deserved.

I wrote, produced, and directed this re-creation of the May 1889 robbery of a US Army payroll wagon in the desert of Eastern Arizona. Filmed within a few miles of the historic scene, we also used an authentic 1880's wagon. This is a "PG" version with the cuss words deleted. Most of the cast and crew were either students or faculty at Eastern Arizona College, Thatcher, Arizona.

“You shouldn’t have to convince people to go to paradise,” --Shelton Johnson, Ranger, Yosemite National Park Although our national parks belong to all Americans, it’s a sad fact that very few people of color ever set foot in some of our country’s most beautiful places.
