Overview: "Neither pure nor simple. . . .Love, truth, integrity." After all, "It is not the perfect, but the imperfect, who have need of love." (Oscar Wilde) In one of Oscar Wilde's comic masterpieces, the game of power and love is played out in Parliament and in private parlors with wit and style. The story revolves around blackmail and political corruption. With its theme of the struggle between public and private honor, our characters discover whether the sins of their past will overwhelm them or make them stronger. Directed by Debra L. Freeberg Gezon Auditorium November 7-9, 14-16, 2013 at 7:30pm

In the end, it seemed, my tribute to Roger turned out to be one not only to him but to his life, and to his family and friends, and to an era many of us shared and loved. People who attended Calvin College in the 50s, 60s, maybe 70s might recognize the time and place, if not the specific players. Friends of Rog will recognize the cast even in profile or silhouette. The photos are mostly my own camerawork and scans from our publications circa 1960. So, yes, it is retro. Rog was anything but retro, but he would be OK with tributes. I accept that its dominant voice is sentiment - I wrote "Unabashedly sentimental"and I don't much care if it is. The audio is a song by EmmyLou Harris (duet with Dan Fogelberg). I first listened to her as a bluegrass folkie--this is a song I found childlike and yearning and charming and wondering, although I never expected to use it this way. There is a poem of course, read by a poet loved by Roger (Rog was occupied back in the day by a fey but, it turned out, incorrect sense of his destiny.) The Thomas Wolfe quote is from Look Homeward Angel, a line Roger especially liked and often quoted; it was the focus of the first true literary discourse I can recall, in the Commons on Franklin Street campus, with Rog and Jim DenBoer and Bill Evenhouse and others holding forth and Stan Wiersma coming by to listen, and as I recall, to settle the matter. OK, maybe I had a little hero worship going. Comment: The intro text screens run rather rapidly and some photos; you can hit the || button on the browser player to pause it.
