I was heading out of Washington Square, when I noticed a man playing guitar down one of the side paths. I'm not sure he was actually busking, since there was no obvious tip jar, but I was drawn to the chaotic nature of his playing. We began chatting and I asked if it was ok for me to photograph him. He then introduced himself as Stevie and offered to play a song he's working on about avant-garde rock legend, Captain Beefheart. Don Van Vliet born January 15, 1941 – December 17, 2010) was an American musician, singer-songwriter and artist best known by the stage name Captain Beefheart. His musical work was conducted with a rotating ensemble of musicians called the Magic Band (1965–1982), with whom he recorded 13 studio albums. Noted for his powerful singing voice with its wide range, Van Vliet also played the harmonica, saxophone and numerous other wind instruments. His music blended rock, blues and psychedelia with avant-garde and contemporary experimental composition. Beefheart was also known for exercising an almost dictatorial control over his supporting musicians, and for often constructing myths about his life.

My smile is stuck I cannot go back to your Frownland My spirit’s made up of the ocean And the sky ‘n’ the sun ‘n’ the moon ‘n’ all my eyes can see I cannot go back to your land of gloom Where black jagged shadows Remind me of the coming of your doom I want my own land Take my hand and come with me It’s not too late for you It’s not too late for me To find my homeland Where a man can stand by another man Without an ego flying With no man lying ‘n’ no one dying by an earthly hand Let the devils burn and the beggar learn ‘n’ the little girls that live in those old worlds Take my kind hand My smile is stuck I cannot go back to your Frownland I cannot go back to your Frownland
