Author: Jonathan Reus. Title: Crackle: A mobile multitouch topology for exploratory sound interaction. Abstract: This paper describes the design of Crackle, a interactive sound and touch experience inspired by the CrackleBox. We begin by describing a ruleset for Crackle's interaction derived from the salient interactive qualities of the CrackleBox. An implementation strategy is then described for realizing the ruleset as an application for the iPhone. The paper goes on to consider the potential of using Crackle as an encapsulated interaction paradigm for exploring arbitrary sound spaces, and concludes with lessons learned on designing for multitouch surfaces as expressive input sensors. Recorded at: 11th International Conference on New Interfaces for Musical Expression. 30 May - 1 June 2011, Oslo, Norway. http://www.nime2011.org

For Crackle Box (Garth Paine) and bamboo whistle (Michael Atherton). Michel Waiswisz died peacefully on June 18, 2008 after fighting cancer for eight months. He was born on the 8th of July 1949 and directed the experimental music research laboratory, STEIM (Holland) for 27 years. Waiswitz was both a musician and visionary - touched by sound and forever willing to be surprised. He had energy of spirit that continues to flow through STEIM into the world. We will miss his touch, crackle, inspiration and constant improvisation of the new. He was the inventor of the Crackle Box, amongst many new musical interfaces; and is perhaps best known for his performances using the Hands interface.

Tweak (the one based in Brattleboro, Vermont USA) plays a set of electronic music at the Tinderbox on December 27, 2008. This night was the last show at the Tinderbox, a collective studio and performance space. Tweak is me (John Levin) and Charlie Schneeweis. On this night there were a lot of bands in the lineup, so we had a short set. We wanted to make it portable, so we both brought our Gakken SX-150's and delay pedals. That was pretty much it, except for a Cracklebox and a tube amp. This was shot on a little Canon Elph by the light of one 60 watt bulb in a dark and funky space, while a lot of the audience was talking (it was a punk rock scene, after all). So the quality is not exactly the best. But it's a document of a moment in time, not to mention my first foray into documenting my work visually. Enjoy!
