A brother and sister were arrested on Christmas for the alleged theft of checks from Shasta County Supervisor Pam Giacomini. Deputies said the pair purchased some $3,000 in merchandise in the McArthur and Fall River Mills area in the past week using the stolen checks. They also attempted to cash checks at US Bank in Burney where a bank employee was suspicious and alerted the sheriff's department. Booked into Shasta County jail were Christina Marie Shepard, also known as Christina Bencini, 35, and Warren Michael Walker, 39. Shepard was arrested at 20608 Hudson Street in Burney. Walker fled, but deputies followed his tracks in the snow to 37178 Superior Avenue where he was arrested. Deputies said some of the merchandise purchased with the stolen checks, including a large screen TV, was found at the Superior Avenue residence.

Deputies arrested Samuel Roy Kraft, 42, of Redding Monday, Nov. 10, 2014, for allegedly resisting arrest, battery on a peace officer, and drug possession after he was spotted behind Safeway "acting unusual, flailing his arms and yelling," said Sgt. Marc St.Clair of the Shasta County sheriff's office. Kraft repeatedly ignored the sergeant's command to keep his hands where the deputy could see them, St. Clair said. When Kraft reached under his shirt as if going for a weapon, St.Clair wrestled him to the ground. A citizen living across the street, Bob Scalf, assisted St.Clair in pinning Kraft to the ground until deputy Bryan Sancibrian and CHP officer JD Mostoufi arrived. A records search shows Kraft has been arrested 61 times since July 2005.

Gregorio Enrique Estrada, 46, entered the US Bank in Burney, California, about 12:15 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 15, 2009, walked up behind dentist Timothy Kersten, 53, of Burney as he spoke with a bank teller and shot Kersten point-blank in the back of the neck with a 9mm pistol. The bullet went through Kersten's neck, along his jaw and exited near his mouth, said Lt. Scott Mayberry of the Redding Police Department. Bank surveillance video shows the gunman ordering a teller to take Kersten to the bank's door and push him out, Mayberry said. A series of still photographs by The Intermountain News shows Kersten leaving the bank and walking to his car as he prepares to drive away. Driving east on Highway 299, he meets up with ambulance personnel a short distance later just east of Angelina's restaurant where video by The Intermountain News shows he gets out of his car and is placed in the ambulance.
