One of the most useless and unnecessary types of light are those that are used to light up blank walls. Okay so the J Willard Marriott Library is a big building but The Dark Ranger doesn't think University of Utah needs to worry about it getting hit by low flying aircraft. All a building needs is light over it's doors. Light draws primates just like it attracts moths and you want them to come to the doors not flutter up against the wall -- mostly talking about moths here... but not entirely. Primates congregating against a bright wall can lead to trouble too -- trouble like graffiti. Why would you light up a wall? Seriously people! If you can think of one good reason to light a blank wall The Dark Ranger would love to hear it. Please post your justification it in the comments below.

It's 3:00 AM! Do you know where The Dark Ranger is? Let's see if we can figure it out... As the camera pulls back from an 80x zoom shot of a large American Flag 12 miles away we see that he's near a mountain top looking down on the lights of 1,000,000 people. And yet from this vantage point he can still see a sky full of stars. How is this possible you ask? "A strong lighting ordinance!" he answers. Because this is the world headquarters of the International Dark-Sky Association. www.darksky.org
