A cup of coffee brings to mind tattooed baristas and fancy espresso machines, and cute little flower designs made out of milk. But there’s so much more to coffee. To actually get that dose of liquid heaven into your hands takes hundreds of hours of work and countless thousands of miles traveled. Every cup of coffee tells a story, many of them involving small family farms in some of the most remote regions of the world. Journey with Darrin Daniel, director of sourcing for Allegro Coffee, to Peru, and experience the adventure behind finding the perfect bean. When you see what goes into getting your coffee from the source, you’ll appreciate your daily jolt that much more. Dark Rye is an online magazine from Whole Foods Market. What if we used the ocean not just as a playground or something from which we extract resources, but rather like a garden that can be sustainably harvested? Cole Meeker and Anastasia Emmons, the founders of The Great and Wonderful Sea of Change Trading Co., a company that makes seaweed-based snacks, certainly see the ocean that way. Seaweed is an infinitely nourishing gift from the seas, one that we dont always fully appreciate. Dark Rye is an online magazine from Whole Foods Market. Too often, good food seems to belong to people living advantaged lifestyles, while the rest are left to forage through a world of fast food and convenience store snacks. In addition to bringing food, Pape brings a friendly face and a place around which authentic community can gather. Dark Rye is an online magazine from Whole Foods Market. Since its devastation by Katrina in 2005, New Orleans continues to rail against its own improbability with the help of people like Jeffrey Schwartz and his organization, Broad Community Connections. Looking to mediate the gap between traditional development and the community, Schwartz seeks to restore the Broad Street corridor to the former cultural vitality of its heyday when backstreet musicians and second lines roamed through a vibrant city that lived. The medium of Ajay Malghan’s photography is food but—hold up, hold up—we know that your Instagram feed is filled with filtered images of half-eaten falafel sandwiches and spicy tuna rolls. We understand, we do, and we feel for you. But Malghan’s photography explores the myriad worlds of food’s complexity hiding just beyond its seeming simplicity. For instance, an orange. Everyone knows what an orange looks like, right? But Malghan's lens toys with the orange until the orange is not an orange but, rather, a curious image of playful ambiguity. There are many people dancing. Wildfires. And all the things that only you will see. Dark Rye is an online magazine from Whole Foods Market. You know how when you’re watching the news and your mind screams, “I can’t believe this is the world! We’ve got to do something! We’ve got to do it now!” Well, if you’re Hugo Kaagman, you don’t just sit around and wait. You do something. You take to the streets with spray paint in hand. Since his first stencil in 1978, Kaagman has knocked down the walls of the traditional art museum and made the city his canvas. Not art as something pretty to look at and sigh. But art as a way to live, to play your own game, and inspire others to make something out of all this rampant nothing. Jay Dean was a mechanic and that was that. He’d certainly never considered becoming an artist. But a back injury in his early 30s led to multiple surgeries. Jay found himself unable to work on cars and unable to provide for himself and his wife. He forgot all his goals, took to bed depressed, and tried to figure out what he was going to do with the rest of his years. One day, as he was cleaning his tools, empty and lost in existential uncertainty, he suddenly began to see something in the junked car parts in his garage. They called to him. He had an artistic inspiration. Jay began to make lamps out of them. The lamps, in return, began to make him.
