Visualising Information for Advocacy (2nd edition) is a book about how advocates and activists use visual elements in their campaigns. This 160-page guide features nearly 50 case studies from around the world to provide an introduction to understanding visual information and a framework for using images for influence. You can get more info, order the book or download it for free on the following link: https://visualisingadvocacy.org/ The ideas in this book have been developed through nearly 50 workshops we have led for activists, journalists and advocates campaigning on issues as diverse as corruption and transparency, pro-democracy, land-grabbing, toxic waste, water scarcity, migration, maternal and child health, forced labour, violence against women, gender and sexuality rights, indigenous people's rights, child rights and anti-torture. These workshops have taken us to many countries to work with activists from Kazakhstan to Kenya. At Tactical Tech we have been analysing how different kinds of visual techniques serve the work of advocacy, and have been testing out our ideas. We have developed three ways to classify how the visual works in advocacy campaigns: Get the idea is about making simple, eye-catching products that convey one concise point, provoking and inviting audiences to find out more about the issue. Get the picture is about creating a visual summary of an argument by crafting a narrative with visuals and data. Get the detail is about presenting data through interactive digital formats in a way that allows the audience to dig deeper and explore the issue for themselves.

A series of stop motion experiments based on the different ways of analysing 9 dreams of mine. In the first part my psychologist friend made a content analysis, finding the pattern of needing help, helping and trusting the most important throughout the dreams. I turned this analysis into a series of tiny symbolic films (Dream Work I). In the second part I used the word frequency analysis tool of the computer, and experimented with showing words on the time border of readibility and montaging sounds overlapping each other.

This video demonstrates some of the analytical functionalities incorporated into FlowSampler, a software developed to support visual analysis of urban flow information extracted from geolocated social media data. The software provides urban planning experts with an integrated data mining and interactive visualisation tool that facilitates data analysis, reasoning and speculation. For technical information, please refer to the paper publication: FlowSampler: Visual Analysis of Urban Flows in Geolocated Social Media Data PDF downloadable at: https://lirias.kuleuven.be/handle/123456789/464697 Please cite the paper if you have found this work useful. A second publication that describes potential applications of urban flow information extracted from geolocated social media data is in the works. The paper will discuss how such information can be used for the specific purpose of studying non-routine commuting behaviour. Please feel free to leave a comment below. Any feedback would be appreciated. This work is funded by KU Leuven and supervised by prof. Andrew Vande Moere. Mécaniques Discursives An installation by Fred Penelle & Yannick Jacquet “While the passage of time seems to accelerate every day, Fred Penelle and Yannick Jacquet offer a pause, a suspension, a breath. A strange mechanism stretches across the wall, populated with shadowy chimeras. They are mysterious and yet somehow familiar. Is this a laboratory experiment or the plan for a future network? Minutely constructed like a fine clock, it traces connections, routes, genuinely-false, looping itineraries, inviting escape, inviting dreams. The narrative is deconstructed like a thousand-storied film script. Every effort is made to lead astray, to turn around, to forge ahead. Time is shredded, decomposed, lost…and yet everything references it. Mécaniques Discursives is like a parenthesis between two epochs: Gutenberg’s and Big Data’s. By contrasting the oldest form of image reproduction (woodcutting) with the most recent digital technologies, the installation straddles centuries and contracts time.” Documentary credits: Directed, shot and edited by Jerome Monnot Music composed by Thomas Vaquié, with sound elements by Matthieu Safatly.
