We get cyclones here often and there's lots of rain and wind with this one. I go for a bit of a look around to check the damage around my place and my mum's. It's all pretty much normal and not unexpected, so we're lucky.

On Site at the Everson "DELUGE" by John Knecht (2010) Hamilton, NY 7 min loop on view Jan 5 - Mar 4, 2012 2 min 30 sec documentation In John Knecht’s ANIMA and DELUGE, apocalyptic anxieties were in the air at UVP Everson, whether flying or falling fast. According to Knecht, “Things have been falling in my videos for decades . . .plastic strawberries that looked like a human heart, cement blocks and infected molars—increasingly became an atmosphere, functioning both as a formal device and a metaphorical space.” DELUGE is directly informed by the Leonardo da Vinci drawing, "A Cloudburst of Material Possessions". It depicts a downpour of everyday objects: rakes, lamps, general debris. Dated 1500 and only partially intact, virtually no information on it is available. Knecht was intrigued by this enigmatic image, so evocative of our own era of consumer excess. Like Leonardo, Knecht's own work is meticulously hand drawn with pencil on paper, before it is scanned and digitally constructed frame by frame. In his own words, Knecht provides "a modernist outlook at a postmodern apocalypse." Student film created for the Digital Film and Screen Arts course at the University for the Creative Arts. Brief: The word 'memory'. This tells the story of an old man who, still mourning over the tragic drowning of his wife long ago, escapes into his memories, where she is still alive. However, reality seeps in, reminding him that he can't stay in denial forever. Absolutely massively huge thanks to Bella Jarvis and Emma Aav for their amazing work on it.
