1. Trans-Computational Pavilion 2.0 - AAVS Madrid 2014

    Under the name, Trans-Computational Membranes, the Architectural Association Visiting School Madrid challenges the conception of flexibility within the context of spatial re-adaptation. The textile pavilion developed for the 2014 edition was conceived from the idea of utilising low cost materials with a high degree of flexibility, interweaving elements together for creating localised stiffness in the areas of the structure with higher level of stress. In continuum mechanics, stress refers to a physical quantity that expresses the internal forces that each particle exert on its neighbour. Trans-Computational Pavilion 2.0 tries to introduce a broader concept of what a particle (or minimal element) could be, understanding each flexible element within it as what each particle would represent in a continues material. PVC pipes bundle into new structural objects and textile pieces get stitched together to generate continuous surfaces. Thus membrane structures generate compression rings for the tubular objects to stay connected, at the same time this linear structure is pushing the membrane for maintaining its tension, creating a symbiotic relationship which results in a stiff architectural element. The event was sponsored by Roca, Universidad Europea Madrid, Official College of Architects (COAM), Actíu, Philips, Volumaniac, Forster Rohner Textile Innovations and the British Embassy Madrid. The Trans-Computational pavilion has recently been exhibited during the Week of Architecture in Madrid ( 03-12 October 2014 ) organised by The Official College of Architects.           Can a pavilion inflate its skin and change its configurations according to the event? Can a pavilion be desmountable and so foldable to fit in a hand luggage? Can an exhibition space be adaptable descend from a ceiling and become a sensorial personal experience? The aim of the seminar, leaded by Josep Miàs and Silvia Brandi, is to investigate the extreme possibilities of structures which make them possible.                 First working prototype of kinetic space frame. Designed and fabricated by Form Changing Structures. Rods are telescopic, powered by electric motors, threaded mechanism causes extension/retraction of rods. Flexible joints allow whole form to change. N.B. this is only one octahedral cell of an array, the next prototype will comprise multiple octahedrons to form a 'sheet' of the material, with the top side clad in an elastic skin, creating a surface that undulates in realtime.
