On December 19, 2012, Illinois Governor Pat Quinn announced the recipients of a $45 million Illinois Early childhood Education Construction Program grant, which will increase access to high-quality ECE services for children in high-need communities with funds for the construction, renovation, or expansion of facilities. The construction grant is a first-of-its-kind endeavor, marking Illinois as the first state in the nation to make this type of investment in facilities. The announcement marked not just a positive step forward for children in high-need communities across Illinois, but also the culmination of six years of advocacy around the issue for the Latino Policy Forum and its partners.

Mamas for Mamas is a group of mothers coming together to take a powerful stand with and for other mothers to help create Little Ripples, a new and innovative early education program in Darfuri refugee camps. Approximately 7,300 children age 2-6 and exposed to severe trauma are without proper care in Eastern Chad. This can be a matter of life or death in a refugee camp, where safety and resources are scarce. Mothers are forced to leave their young children unattended during the day while they must search for resources to sustain the family. Learn more and get involved at http://littleripples.org/mamas/

Having trained more than 500 local Latino parents since 2010, the Metro Chicago Abriendo Puertas (“Opening Doors”) parent leadership and advocacy program, a national curriculum being offered locally through the Latino Policy Forum, announces its goal to train a total of 1,000 local parents by the end of its third year. With a train-the-trainer workshop held in Chicago from November 26-28, 2012, this third cohort marks the first time that Abriendo Puertas will be offered with locally-trained facilitators. The program aims to mitigate stubborn Latino education achievement gaps by empowering children’s first teachers—their parents—to build a strong academic foundations in their homes.
