              • 21st Century Fluencies: Minnewashta Arcade

                02:25

from Minnetonka Public Schools / Added

Kindergarten and 5th grade students at Minnewashta Elementary worked together to solve a problem; how can you build an Arcade from things around your home? The class watched a short video on "Caine's Arcade" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=faIFNkdq96U), then wondered how they could create their own. The idea fit right into 21st Century learning. The math, pre-engineering skills and collaboration between grades were a perfect way for Mrs. Lund and Mrs. Antonsen to teach the students the Solution Fluency. Solution Fluency is the ability to think creatively to solve problems in real time by clearly defining the problem, designing an appropriate solution, delivering the solution and then evaluating the process and the outcome. This is about whole-brain thinking - creativity and problem solving applied on-demand.

Whitt Elementary in Grand Prairie, TX will be Whitt Fine Arts Academy next year, with an emphasis on technology. I shot the video and then had the principal April Shaw watch it and just say what popped into her mind. I then put some effects on her voice, so she would sound like a futuristic airport intercom. The future is now.

This video is an exemplar of an activity from Carnegie Hall’s Music Educators Toolbox entitled “Comparing Different Versions of a Known Song.” Visit the Toolbox for the accompanying lessons, activities, and assessments: http://bit.ly/1uqJXtQ. Students listen and move to musical excerpts, then use the Student Worksheet to select the corresponding dynamic, tempo, and articulation choices that they hear. The Music Educators Toolbox is a collection of free, open-source learning resources and assessment tools created for classroom use by music teachers and Carnegie Hall teaching artists. Developed after an in-depth, five-year partnership between Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute and PS/MS 161 in upper Manhattan, the resources are designed to be adaptable for use in a variety of music classroom settings. The Toolbox currently features grade-specific music education resources addressing fundamentals of Meter, Rhythm, Form and Design, Expressive Qualities, Pitch, and Performing. To learn more, visit http://www.carnegiehall.org/toolbox/. Major funding for The Music Blueprint Model School was provided by The Irene Diamond Fund. Additional support was provided by the Lanie & Ethel Foundation.
