Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Music by Black Bananas. Ben Brough is a self-taught American artist born 1 mile from the beach in 1978. He and his family moved to Hawaii's Kona coast in '84 ito help his grandparents open a clothing store for locals. By the 4th grade he decided he was going to be an artist and was already addicted to surfing and skateboarding. Ben left school at 15 after an itch of wanderlust and traveled for the next 12 yrs and developed a love for different cultures and customs. He now lives and works in southern California with his wife and raising two daughters, painting and art directing brands in the Action Sports world. His influences vary from Dadaists to German expressionists, Cartoonists to kids art and cannot go one day without listening to music. Ben has shown his art world wide in Hawaii, New York, Mexico, Hong Kong, Japan , France, Spain and California. Ben's work of brightly colorful abstract paintings resemble a mix of Hannah-Barbara cartoons on acid, ancestral cave paintings and automatic art making. The creative force behind his work stems from a life lived abroad, fast paced and ever changing climates. Much like the ever flowing and moving ocean waves that Ben loves to surf on, his art resembles the common ups and downs of everyday life through a stream of consciousness and touches on subjects simple yet powerful from life, death to celebration with food and drink, coming together as a tribe, personal growth, use of symbols from cultures to deepen the narration and comedic nonsense from the subconscious. With a primitive approach to art being mostly self taught, there is a constant out flow of drawing, painting and ever changing creative roles he plays to survive day to day. She works out of Los Angeles, Toronto, and New York.

She is a self-taught artist in addition to having worked under art professors from Yale, UCLA, and Otis College of Art and Design in continuing her effort to build a well-regarded art practice. Her sole mission is to master art and approach to form and content to create works with a significant artistic and cultural impact.

Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Curated by Kevin Appel & Juli Carson. The University Art Galleries (UAG) at UC Irvine’s Claire Trevor School of the Arts will mount a retrospective exhibition of paintings by Ed Moses, utilizing all three galleries and featuring works from the 1970s to the present. Cross-Section will trace the common thematic thread binding Moses’s prolific and continuous act of painting. In so doing, the philosophical continuity of the artist’s disparate visual strategies will be framed, strategies the artist has repeated and contradicted, as his investigation into the painted form has changed direction or reversed course over the past 5 decades. The curatorial perspective, in turn, will provide a rhizomatic framework to Moses’s oeuvre – a genealogy of these strategies – in place of the conventional, chronological account typically used by institutions to situate an artist’s work within historical movements alone. An accompanying exhibition catalogue, featuring dynamic color plates of the work and scholarly essays by the curators as well as the legendary art historian Barbara Rose, provides the cultural context for Moses’s mutational practice. Film by Eric Minh Swenson. The placement of James Turrell's new Skyspace: Air Apparent on the ASU Tempe campus near “three of the most sophisticated science facilities on Earth” was not an accident. Faculty and research staff in Interdisciplinary Science and Technology Building 4 (ISTB4) is renowned for designing instruments to enable scientific exploration of other worlds. In addition to complex labs, ISTB4 provides public outreach spaces on the first and second floor that invite visitors into the scientific and engineering challenges that invigorate studies of Earth and the universe. As with all Turrell's investigations into light and perception, his ASU Skyspace is unique in its architectural manifestation, rootedness to place, and nuance of materiality, detail and character. It is intended to balance the poetry of his ideas with the pragmatic concerns of climate, comfort, 24/7 public access, personal safety, universal accessibility, and budget responsiveness. Working with Turrell to complement the perceptual experience of the phenomenon of light, this Skyspace strives to be a minimalist background to the art and the idea. Film by Eric Minh Swenson. Mads Christensen's dynamic light-based works explore how we as viewers respond to illumination and color through the neuroreceptors of the human visual analog system. Following in the footsteps of groundbreaking artists exploring this medium like James Turrell, Doug Wheeler, Dan Flavin, Ivan Navarro and Olafer Eliasson, Christensen is interested in the manner by which our brain translates the information gathered by the receptors in the human eye into specific colors, and consequently the emotional experience. Christensen finds the interplay between color and intensity of light in relation to the human vision system fascinating. For example, the human eye senses red and blue light differently. Red-sensitive cones are prominent near the center of the retina, yielding great detail in the perceived image. There are however, relatively few blue-sensitive cones which make it difficult to see detail with just blue light. However, when blue and red lights are combined as in What Are You Blinking About, unexpected and fascinating consequences of pattern and multiple colors appear because of the neurology in the human vision system. Trained as an electrical engineer, Christensen’s work is an interplay between his software designs and the intangible qualities of light as medium. While artists throughout history have been fascinated by depicting light, Christensen creates what appears as two-dimensional paintings with light. This platform is reminiscent of the flat and static shape of a painting but its animation and range of color creates a dialog with the space by illuminating the viewer and surrounding area with ambient light. The dramatic, stimulating and soothing qualities inherent in his work present an evolution of visual experience. Christensen is being recognized by collectors and museum professional as possessing vast and palpable creativity, technical expertise and visual sophistication to perpetuate this fascinating evolution of light as art.
