Werdi’s journey from the oppressive environment of northern Somalia to a refugee camp where he spent nearly four years, then coming to Syracuse without knowing any English is one of great trials and upheavals, yet his laugh can warm a room an instant. While being an outsider is always difficult, navigating his constantly changing situation, and finding his own path through sports, clubs, religion, and the support of his family--Werdi has built a community around himself. Werdi plays a starting position on the soccer team. He is a member of the National Society of Black Engineers and DECA. Werdi prays five times daily, including during school in a prayer room. His faith as a Muslim plays a major role the shaping of his worldview. Much of his motivation comes from soccer--his dream is to become a major league soccer coach and lead his team to the world cup. He is the oldest of nine children and takes a major role in watching and raising his brothers and sisters. Werdi’s journey is a wonderful example of how resilient a person can be, yet still smile brightly.

Paul Gibson, 16, of Baldswinville New York, had a hard time in middle school. Absences, being bullied and poor work ethic was a thing of the past. Now he is enrolled at OCM BOCES in Liverpool and considers school to be his sanctuary from boredom. His mother Laura, who is stricken by progressive multiple sclerosis, adopted Paul from Hong Kong when he was five. He was in a special needs orphanage after prenatal birth problems such as deafness and difficulty seeing had him in search of a loving home. Now at school, he fits in. He is passing his classes. He is volunteering his time and creating his own efforts to make differences in other peoples lives. His charismatic personality and popularity with his fellow classmates make him feel right at home in the alternative high school. His mother is pleased with his success and Paul is proud that he can be just as successful as his other brothers and sisters and make his mom proud. Produced for the 2012 Fall Workshop at Newhouse at Syracuse University. Shot with the 5D mark iii

But when their cousin’s children were put into the foster care system, they decided to open their home and welcome them into their family. The video details the family's daily life as they cope with the noise and stress that comes from having eight people in a household.
