So for one of my classes at Amarillo College, I had to go around with a group of three other people (Breanne Bullard, Alexis Adams, and Adrian Moore) and interview some part of the school staff or other interesting parts about the school. We chose to interview the financial aid department, and with financial aid being as boring as it is, I decided to make this thing a little more ridiculous.

Latino College Preparatory Academy is a charter school in San Jose, CA. The school serves low socioeconomic families primarily in East Side San Jose. 99% of our students are Latino and 95% of our students qualify for free or reduced cost lunches under the National School Lunch Program, which means the majority of our students’ families live below the poverty line. The school’s aim to close the achievement gap for Latinos is dependent on student engagement, yet sports have consistently been a luxury the school cannot afford. Small class sizes and a focus on literacy across the curriculum have historically left little in the budget for athletics. In order to get many of our students to have “buy-in” inside the classroom, LCPA teachers have taken it upon themselves to start after school programs, clubs, and even electives. One such new program last year was the LCPA lacrosse team. With generous financial aid from Northern California Lacrosse, the Koret Foundation, All West Lacrosse, and the National Hispanic University (along with equipment donations from UC Santa Cruz, San Jose State, and Santa Clara University Lacrosse teams), the school was able to support a pilot lacrosse program for the 2011-2012 season and again for 2012-2013. Students are only expected to purchase a stick of their own ($20), and the school checks out all other needed equipment to players. The grants have made the purchases of high quality gear and jerseys possible; gear that our players otherwise would not be able to afford. The program has been a resounding success in many regards: - The school, long dominant in soccer in their league, had only once before had a winning team in any sport in the school’s history. The LCPA Eagles had two winning JV seasons in their first two years. - Students who had never played an organized sport before found themselves integral parts of the team. - Many students have lost dramatic amounts of weight. One in particular lost over 30 pounds from preseason training to the end of the season. - They placed 2nd place in the Aptos JV tournament before winning their first ever game, and then returned the next year to win the tournament outright. - One player (Francisco Velazco) went on to play college ball at UC Santa Cruz; with his help UCSC won the 2013 WCLL championship. - Another player (Marco Estanislao) will begin playing for UC Davis, a division-one club team, for the 2015 season. - We established a working relationship with Santa Clara University who hosts practices for us on their campus. - The team started their varsity campaign in 2014, the season highlighted by several tight games against established programs (Saratoga, Christopher, Leland). But perhaps most importantly, the program is regarded as a success by the teachers who have seen student engagement dramatically increase from the players. Students who had not previously found reasons to put that much effort in their schoolwork have in many cases become classroom leaders. The message from day one is clear: This is a school sport. The players are students first and athletes second. Any player who is not cutting in the class is not welcome on the field. No exceptions. -Head Coach Juddson Taube

"MECA is committed to making our exceptional educational experience affordable. Welcoming students of all income levels is at the heart of who we are. When financial aid is factored in, many students are surprised to find that the cost of attending MECA is comparable to or less than that of a state school." - President Don Tuski, Ph.D.
