This video was produced by Fireman’s Fund Insurance in order to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the strategic philanthropy program called Heritage which has provided more than $30 million dollars in equipment, training and fire education to communities and the fire service throughout the US. Heritage was founded in 2004 in order to focus the giving of the company so as to maximize its philanthropic spend, engage its employees and agent partners, generate greater media exposure and ultimately to increase sales. A program designed to meet a real need: The tragedy of 9/11 and the death of hundreds of brave New York firefighters exposed the fact that many fire departments around the country were woefully underfunded. Subsequent analysis of the fire service showed that many firefighters, both in professional and volunteer departments, were put in harms way because they lacked basic communications equipment, breathing apparatus, heat sensing cameras, turn out gear and other equipment. Local budget cuts eroded funding at a time when firefighters and other first responders were being asked to take on new tasks requiring advanced training and skills: from cleaning up toxic and hazardous waste, to meeting the threat of “dirty” bombs to fighting much larger and more aggressive wildfires. The designers of Heritage wisely understood they had an opportunity to address the needs of the fire service while leveraging the storied history of The Fund and its original commitment to the volunteer firefighters of San Francisco. They felt sure they could meet a valuable social goal of supporting firefighters which would also assist in achieving the financial growth of the company. Fireman’s Fund would do well by doing good. They spent months crafting a strategy that earned the buy-in of leadership along with a commitment to a high level of initial funding. Provided leadership and funding, Heritage achieved an enviable level of national exposure for the company while delivering on the promise to protect firefighters. The program was designed to achieve several goals: 1. To meet the critical needs of the fire service for equipment and training throughout the US. 2. To align The Fund’s history and values with its corporate giving. 3. To engage employees through a highly visible, values driven program. 4. To increase sales among the agency network – especially agents who understood the value in supporting their local fire departments in order to achieve higher levels of business success, . 5. To engage agents and their teams, increase product “stickiness” and to increase their loyalty and commitment. The founders of Heritage planned carefully and decided to create a series of early public events that would maximize PR exposure while delivering needed resources to local fire departments. Events in San Diego, San Francisco, Atlanta and New York showcased Heritage as it delivered on its promise to protect firefighters and make communities safer. The Heritage team simultaneously launched a mechanism for engaging agents and employees in determining how grants would be allocated, where and how grants would be given etc. Under the thoughtful leadership of Danielle Cagan, Heritage has earned Fireman’s Fund a reputation for supporting communities and the fire service. She worked tirelessly with The National Fallen Firefighters Association and other national organizations to make sure firefighters return home safely. Heritage continues to meet its initial goals by providing needed equipment, training and support for the fire service. The program continues to inspire employees of Fireman’s Fund, engage its agents and brokers and protect communities.

Nick Moir talks about growing up in lower Blue Mountains where bushfires were more than a part of life they were a constant fear. Some of the worst bushfires in Sydney’s history have come through that region … Moir has been a photographer with the Sydney Morning Herald for twenty years. He started specializing in fires and severe weather events in 1999 and completed a basic firefighting course with the RFS in 2001 before any official media training had been designed. He mentions the images of bushfires featured in this video as well as how documentary photography of major bushfires can help scientists understand how these fires work. Moir now lives in Davidson and is married with 4 children and has a fire pump and drenching system on his house because he is paranoid. GLENDORA CALIFORNIA BRUSH FIRE ARSON 2014 FIRE FIGHTERS HELICOPTERS AIRPLANES The Colby fire is threatening the residential community of Glendora in the San Gabriel Valley, just 25 miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles. Mandatory evacuations have been ordered as unseasonably warm weather, a year of dry conditions and the infamous Santa Ana winds have combined to spread the flames out of control. News helicopters broadcast images of at least one house burning to the ground. Several hundred firefighters were on the scene, the Associated Press reported. The fire is known as the Colby fire for the name of a trail near where it is believed to have ignited. The blaze started early Thursday morning and grew rapidly, awakening the neighborhood about 6 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Times. Two hours later, the fire had burned 125 acres, the newspaper reported. The Azusa Police Department ordered residents north of Sierra Madre Boulevard and east of Azusa Canyon to evacuate. The Glendora Police Department announced earlier Thursday that three people were in custody in connection with the fire; no additional information was immediately available, and the department did not specify whether those individuals were under arrest. The National Weather Service issued red flag warnings for areas of Los Angeles, Ventura, San Bernadino, Orange, Riverside and San Diego counties through Friday, indicating a high risk of fire. The service cited strong winds, with gusts of up to 40 miles per hour in the region’s valleys, low humidity and “historically dry fuels.” “If fire ignition occurs, there could be rapid spread of wildfire that would lead to a threat to life and property,” forecasters warned. The temperature in Glendora is expected to reach 86 degrees Thursday.
