facebook.com/mennofokma / facebook.com/florisvosstudio - A man has, or thinks he has, connections with another planet. He’s acting to their cultural beliefs and mutates to their climate. Connection on earth is lost and he's abandoned by the people around him. Then it seems he found a way to travel to their dimension. He leaves his valuable possessions behind as a final goodbye. - The project started ( back in May ) after we lost a few pitches and had the urge to create. Rulesset: a basic concept, achievable with our own gear and a minimal budget. Most important to have fun and enthuse other people to join us in creating. Krampfhaft is a musician and friend we’re connected with and often collaborate on (commercial) projects. The melancholic tonality in ‘Before We Leave’ grabbed our attention and was convoking to be translated into picture. - It’s shot on our own Lumix GH4 and lenses during the summer of 2014 in Soesterduinen. - MUSIC: Krampfhaft - Before We Leave DIRECTION & PRODUCTION: Floris Vos & Menno Fokma DOP: Jarl Piepers COSTUME & STYLING: Roxanne Mion GEL/MATERIAL: Shai Langen DEVICE: Kjell Van Norel CAST: Joris Van Grunsven SET PRODUCTION: Roos Wijnen

". Shortcutz, an Amsterdam platform for (short) filmmakers, invited us to create the graphic package for their award show. We created 11 idents for different categories like Best Screenplay, Best Director etc. Because the amount of idents and a period of only 4 weeks to create it, we decided to keep it simple. We came up with a list of metaphors for each category, picked the strongest ones and created a small story/setting around it. We aimed on a blend of mystery & surrealism. Proceeding our exploration in live action combined with CGI. Although we try to keep it feasible it was still a huge amount of work so we approached a few talented 3d artists. - All shot on a Lumix GH3, in and around our studio on the NDSM, Amsterdam. - More images here: pinterest.com/mennofokma/shortcutz-idents/

The official video is commissioned by Global Commerce and used for internal purposes. While the content is confidential we decided to create a new cut. Focusing on the subplot instead of the main story. The remaining storyline is quite thin but we're happy to show you our new discoveries on cinematography and paying attention to set design! - Direction: FLORIS+MENNO DOP: Michael Brooke Producer: Marcel v/d Velden Art Department: Femke Hoebe Art Dept. Project: The Rapid Eye Client: Floris + Menno Music and Sound Design: Box Of Toys Audio BACKGROUND/ The Rapid Eye is a short experimental art & fashion film brought to us by Amsterdam based directorial duo Floris+Menno. The project is born from their desire to experiment with a fragmented way of storytelling and intuitive workflow. Whilst a short film in it’s own right, The Rapid Eye was also featured as the opening titles for the 2013 Playgrounds motion festival in Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Tilburg. BXFTYS had the pleasure of attending the festival, meeting the team and experiencing the film in a theatre setting. APPROACH/ It was clear from the start of the audio post production process that the film existed in a predominantly surreal and dream like world. The protagonist awakens in a disorientated, narcotic state and embarks upon a journey of realisation. As such we wanted the music to reflect the unworldly environment without inferring an overly deistic interpretation of the film. The majority of the sound design centres around the use of tortured metallic sound effects. This choice was made in order to accentuate the distressing and overcast tone of the film, as well as a generally organic approach to the soundtrack. Our metal sounds were created by recording with contact microphones; microphones that capture sound via physical contact with vibrating objects (much like a stethoscope).

 - INSIDE OUT A universe inside yourself. In an imaginative and surreal way we see the growth of a personality. The person develops into a self-confident woman with the will and pride to share her true self to the world around her. 1. We see a girl in an empty secluded world. Her dress is basic and she is not remarkable in her surroundings. 2. We see that her abstract inner world bubbles and develops. It starts growing and becomes more dynamic and colourful. 3. The need to show itself on the outside increases. At first she searches for the right way of expressing. It makes her perhaps anxious or insecure. 4. But after a while it comes with more confidence and conviction. The inner world manifests greatly and for the whole world to behold.

We started with the theme of personality in social media at first. After narrowing it down and let it match with FITC we took it into the direction of the creation process. We wanted the viewer to be sucked into the mind of a creative. Show his roller coaster of emotions in his process. We contacted creative writer Tifene Huchet to write the story. She shaped Sam, a man that dreamed about discovering the universe since he was a little boy and is driven by it till this day. After creating a moving storyboard and treatment a lot of people became enthusiastic and joined us to fight the deadline (2 1/2 weeks from there on). With guys working from Sweden & Los Angeles, Skype was a real invention! We divided scenes, so everybody could do his own bit. With rendering and compositing done at our studio we could match the final look and created it as a whole. We aimed on creating a film noir look with its typical lighting and be very subtle with adding color. Studio Takt did an amazing job (again!). He finished it in only 4 days. We're surprised how he achieved to glue all scenes together smoothly. Thank you guys, we think it was a labour of love! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Direction & Design: Floris Vos (Soulbase) & Menno Fokma Creative Writer: Tifene Huchet Music & Sounddesign: Joris Van Grunsven (Studio Takt) Narrator: Terry Mann / Boy: Mick Lefevre Animators/Designers: Fredrik Ekholm / Heerko Groefsema / Kevin Megens / Sander Van Dijk / Ton Mikkers / Wouter Kroese / Marius Denisse / Johannes Matsson

www.facebook.com/florisvosstudio / www.facebook.com/mennofokma - When going in a new sort of hypnosis therapy, a girl forces herself to face a dreadful moment from her past. The Rapid Eye is a short experimental art & fashion film which is born from the personal need to experiment with a fragmented way of storytelling, practical effects, aesthetics and evoking emotions on a subconscious level. We started the film by experimenting and recording a lot of different scenes we had in mind. Mostly by just the 2 of us. We paid attention to an intuitive way of working. During the process we connected the dots and developed our script into something bigger. With limited budget we managed to arrange locations and a great crew to shoot the spine of the film. We worked together with the amazing team from Box Of Toys Audio. They recorded vocals with a Scandinavian Yojk singer, Juhán Niila Stålka, and custom samples on the HMS Belfast warship in London. - SCREENED ON: Playgrounds Digital Arts Fest (http://www.playgroundsfestival.nl), November 6,7&8, The Netherlands. - Direction Floris Vos & Menno Fokma Sound Box of Toys Audio (www.boxoftoysaudio.com/) Woman Inez Verhille Camera Michael Brooke Gaffer Bart Van Tunen Fashion Producer Py Tswang Jin Set Producer Marcel v/d Velden Stylist Afagh Morrowatian Fashion Design (in church) Anne De Grijff Make-Up & Hair Ineke Brugman Add.camera & Post Floris Vos & Menno Fokma Catering Marianne Smit & Roos Wijnen - All shot on the Lumix GH3 with a wide range of lenses (mostly Voigtlanders) - More images here: http://www.pinterest.com/mennofokma/the-rapid-eye-short-film/
