A group of six 5th graders at Scales Technology calling themselves the DC Buddies have organized a food drive for cats and dogs in their neighborhood. After seeing homeless, starving dogs outside their school gates and an abandoned house full of feral cats in their neighborhood, these 5th graders, with the assistance of 2 graduate students at ASU, decided to take action. They identified a nearby organization, Lost Our Home pet foundation, which not only rescues homeless animals but has a food pantry to assist animal owners who are struggling to afford expensive pet food and other supplies. These fifth graders are a part of a partnership with a class of ASU graduate students in which they identified a pressing problem within their school or neighborhood, and, guided by their ASU partners, devised a project using art to create solutions. They have created a variety of marketing tools to publicize their food drive, including fliers and a video, as well as written and performed in the daily video announcements at their school, and helping write this press release. These kids are, in the words of group member Syeda, “helping the dogs and cats have a home and food and toys.” Another group member, Ethan, talks about why these kids chose this problem, “We wanted to work on raising food for animals because the homeless dogs looked sad and alone with no owners.” Giselle wants to make it clear that they believe in their ability to help their community despite their age, “We’re not just 5th graders, we’re human beings.” If you want to donate food, cat litter, or pet toys, you can bring the items to Scales Technology Academy, Tempe, AZ. There is a donation box in the front office, and the kids will be accepting donations through April 22nd. All the food, litter and toys raised will go to Lost Our Home pet foundation, which benefits struggling pet owners in the Phoenix metro area.
