As we come together today to worship the Lord, there are many things that we as believers take for granted. We believe that the Bible, the Word of God, is indeed THE WORD OF GOD! We believe the Bible to be true, that it is a Divine document inspired by God and given to us as a direct and thoughtful communication from the hand of God. We also believe that Jesus Christ is the Incarnate Word, God clothed in human flesh, i.e., The Son of God. We believe that Christ is God in His person. God has revealed the glory of God to mankind in the express image of God Himself, the Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that He, Christ, is the focal point of all of history and all of God’s Word. We believe that the Bible accurately speaks of and reveals Christ to us. He is the living Word. In Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead, bodily. We also believe that there is an overriding message from God given to us in the life, words and example of Christ. This is the gospel, the good news, i.e., “God so loved the world. . .” (John 3:16). The gospel is the good news of new life, love, forgiveness, and complete transformation. All of these truths are at the very core of Christianity. Every true and effective church must be Bible centered, Christ centered and Gospel centered. The local church must be a church of the Word!

GOSPEL-CENTRED SERVICE THE BIG IDEA: The gospel empowers service. THE BIBLE READING: Philippians 2:5-11 (ESV) 5 Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, 6 who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, 7 but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. 9 Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, 10 so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. KEY SCRIPTURE: “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:14) THE BLURB: The gospel frustrates our desire to be self-made and self-sufficient. Because the gospel shows us that we need saving, that we needed someone to rescue us. And Christ was that Saviour. He came to serve us. This is the essence of the gospel, not that we serve Christ but that He served us. This means our service begins and ends with Jesus. In this sermon we will hear how BPCC – you and I – have been called to serve one another like Christ has served us, for the glory of God and the good of our community.

THE BIG IDEA: The gospel forms the church. THE BIBLE READING: 1 Corinthians 15:1-11 (ESV) 15 Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, 2 and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain. 3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures, 5 and that he appeared to Cephas, then to the twelve. 6 Then he appeared to more than five hundred brothers at one time, most of whom are still alive, though some have fallen asleep. 7 Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles. 8 Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. 9 For I am the least of the apostles, unworthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward me was not in vain. On the contrary, I worked harder than any of them, though it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me. 11 Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed. KEY SCRIPTURE: And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent (Colossians 1:18) THE BLURB: The gospel is not merely one thing among many in the life of a church but rather the means by which the church exists. It is the very thing that forms the church and gives it life. In this sermon we will discover how BPCC – you and I – have been given the mission as God’s people to proclaim and embody the gospel for the glory of God and the good of our community.
