January 25, 2015 Text: 1 Peter 1:22-2:3 In the 2000 movie “Cast Away,” Tom Hanks stars as a FedEx employee named Chuck Noland, who is stranded on a deserted island for 4 years after a FedEx plane he’s on crashes in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. His only supplies are a variety of packages that were on the plane, including a volleyball. After a while, Chuck is so desperate for interaction that he starts talking to the ball as he struggles to survive. He develops such significant feelings for “Wilson” that when the ball falls off a raft and floats away beyond Chuck’s reach, he weeps uncontrollably. He’s so wired for community that the loss of the only “friend” he had was almost too much to bear. We are wired for community, and not by accident. God created us to be relational people. Of course, our experience tells us that relationships, by definition, are messy. I think that’s why so much of Scripture is dedicated towards helping us understand why and how we are supposed to relate with each other. “This is Amazing Grace!”, our preaching series through 1 Peter, continues with our text, 1 Peter 1:22-2:3. Peter builds on the foundation of the incredible grace that we’ve received through Christ by adding to his description of the holiness that God’s grace enables us to pursue. Peter’s thoughts move right into one practical outcome of grace: our love for our Christian brothers and sisters. We’ll take a close look at what Peter thinks our love for each other should look like, as well as how we can sustain that love going forward. It might be easier if we just had to talk to volleyballs our whole lives (which conveniently don’t talk back), but that’s not what we’re made for. Instead we get the chance to form deep and abiding connections with the people God places in our lives. Let’s look to God’s Word for some encouragement and conviction about how we can best love others.
