For Beth and her family Netherton park is a chance to escape to the country in middle of town. With plenty of places to play, climb, explore and learn the kids love to get out in the fresh air. For Beth and her mother-in-law, yoga and outdoor Zumba sessions are a fun way to excercise and make new friends. The whole family treasure the space so much that they were happy to get their hands dirty - and have fun - volunteering on a recent clean up day.

At the Chesapeake location of Tidewater Community College, we see a student center that incorporates the outdoors and natural landscape in its design. Jeff Dunbar, Student Center Director, explains how an emphasis on green space, the use of large amounts of glass windows, and wetlands preservation has contributed to the overall goal of making a welcoming place for students, guests, and visitors.

'Community Harvest' shares the story of the creation of the North Columbia Heights Green, a community garden and collaborative green space in NW Washington, DC. Once an abandoned lot and vehicle dumping ground, the Green is a testament to the transformative power of community-driven urban space reclamation. The film was premiered at the first annual Community Harvest Festival on Nov. 20, 2010. Located behind Red Rocks Pizza, the North Columbia Heights Green is situated in the back alleys off of the east side of the 3300 block of 11th Street, NW. This video piece was part of my graduate work, A Typology of Green Space, for a BA Photography in Dublin Institute of Technology. A Typology of Green Space looks at green spaces in the city and how such spaces function in everyday life. How they are used and the many ways natural space is controlled to satisfy the ever-expanding needs of a city. The work conceptually creates temporary obstructions, mainly walls and corners, with simple materials in various scales and green space settings. These interventions signify a sectioning off or redefining of space in an abstract sense. Theoretically the work also references the primitive connection between humanity and nature and of green spaces as city dwellers’ pastoral link to more traditional landscapes of reflection and tranquility. Text accompanied film stills in the presented book which explains (abstractly) the concept of the video: Constraint. Winds brushing against, Dressed in a uniform, A uniform of blackness, A solider marking a terrain, A cartographer mapping, A gardener building a fence. His body with wood and yellowed string glides across the green, Jamming it’s foundations into the earth…1,2,3,4. His string creates the barriers, Those walls extend at indeterminable levels. He falters at times, This only stalls development briefly. A symbol, An icon of humanity. Self-containing, Locking in, boxing in the rest of us, Separating a reality from a fiction, He stands still, A brief moment and he tires of himself too easily, Feeble and a whim. Realising his decision, he begins to break. He built this box in an automated state But it is his bone and muscle that goes up against a fortress of bamboo and twine. He pushes awkwardly with a dull haste, against prison-type walls of his own creation. Links: http://daviddohertyphoto.com/ http://ditphoto2012.com/search/david+doherty
