1. A Grizzly Bear Dream

900 students and staff from Mountainview Elementary in Santa Clarita create a giant grizzly bear, a creature found on the state flag but unfortunately long extinct in California. This cover image of me climbing an 80-ft fire truck ladder getting ready to organize the bear was shot from a little drone copter, an increasingly valuable tool in this art form!

      • "forever, approximately" by kendra

        from Renée Barry / Added

music by grizzly bear Forever, Approximately: So many days of the week I find myself singing the songs that sang your absence even strangers know them now even people passing in the busy streets hear the low humming of my wishing and whisper behind their looking glass hands ‘Oh look, she is low in the river again she is turning back to rocks, back to tumbling stones. Oh look, she is lost trying to walk back home doesn’t she know?’         they whisper ‘doesn’t she know?’ You must know by now that I cannot stop trying to follow your footsteps that each time I hear a poem about forever I think of when you’ll come back for it that I have been waiting like a soggy old train station for a glimpse of you face coming back a glimpse of you walking towards me with intention as if you had meant to meet me here all along this is the reason I spend so much time with your name writing it down as many different ways as I can think to remember writing it down with as many words as I can remember exist they say there are about three quarters of a million words in the english language I have given each one to the shadow that you left here tried each one to see how it suited you I’ve written them into every kind of sentence trying to give your body shape again trying to give those shoulders something of substance again I’ve written them into poems, into picnics, into constellations each star like a withered crabapple, each buttered bread crumb melting on your tongue a star whisked away to join the light, the dark, the color of starlight, of falling in love

darling, there are roughly a hundred trillion stars in the sky I am sure I have wished you back here on each one at least twice, but still you have folded each scrap of sky I’ve seen in this country into my prayers, my wishes, my thoughts cast off to space, as food for stars before I could even breathe out, before you could even breathe in but still you sing me songs for across the country like you are bookmarking a space for your return each time I count the distance I measure it out differently, in miles, in satellites, in the way sound waves carry across water in the way that there are no wide bodies of water between us it is no wonder you can’t hear me anymore
if I were to walk around the earth in a straight line I would arrive back here after having walked twenty four thousand nine hundred and one miles but still you would not be here there would still be cornfields and cowfields and cities full of windows masquerading as fireflies you would still be one thousand five hundred and fifty miles south of here singing sweet songs to every pretty girl with ears
So, now I walk no distance, wave no signs, now I shout down to the mouth of the mighty Mississippi hoping the sound, the song will carry itself to you hoping it will not need to ask any directions, and only turn right when it finds you to follow and it will say, in all of it’s nervous whisper and sweet breath Darling please just let me go, please      just let me        go.
