Thank God for the Salvos. They have come to the rescue… again. Figures show one Australian life is now being lost to suicide every 5 hours and globally, one person around the world dies every 40 seconds due to suicide. The Salvation Army launched a new Hope Line last week which highlights that suicide prevention is everyone’s business. My guest today has spent the past 60 years serving street people and assisting countless citizens contemplating suicide. He is the Chair of the Salvation Army Suicide Prevention Committee in the Australia Eastern Territory and has been awarded an Order of Australia Medal for his work in this field.

For decades, Dial-a-prayer was an important telephone service and tens of thousands of people rang in to be inspired and prayed for, for their day. The Telco’s printed the Dial-a-prayer numbers in bold on the front and inside covers of the phone books. But Dial-a-prayer has dropped off the landscape in recent times. But the service is about to be rejuvenated by Adventist Media’s Ministry Centre. John Gate is the director of this rejuvenated ministry.

Len Barnard started working for his church back in 1933. When the second world war broke out, he served with the Australian Infantry Forces in Papua New Guinea as a paramedic. Then in 1949, he went back there as a medical missionary to build and operate a leper colony at Mt Hagen in the western highlands. His wife Mavis assisted him by working in outpatients clinics and was a midwife for many of the women. They spent 30 years altogether as pioneer missionaries in Papua New Guinea, but my guest’s greatest joy as a pioneer was to fly the very first Adventist mission plane to go into service anywhere in the world.

Dennis Perry has been pronounced clinically dead three times in his life, but I can assure you he is alive and well. And even though he is 61, he says he is only 21 on the inside. He worked with health food enterprises for 36 years in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. In 1999, he returned to Australia and helped the Seventh-day Adventist owned Sanitarium Health Food Company to gain market leadership in the South Pacific. But it was whilst he was visiting Tonga that he was confronted by real poverty for the first time. He saw families living on the local rubbish dump, feeding off scraps. So he started ‘Sanitarium - Operation Food for Life’, which over the last nine years has fed 450,000 people in the Cook Islands, Tonga, Fiji, Kiribati and Papua New Guinea.

This week we have two guests: 1. Ray Coombe discusses religious liberty following the 60 Minutes story about the state of the Christian church in Iraq. It is the worst persecution in the 2000 years since the Christian community was started by the apostle, Thomas, who headed east in the year 35. 2. Archaeologist David Down discusses the finding of a piece of pottery, almost 3,000 years old, bearing an inscription with Goliath’s name where the ancient city of Gath used to be. One of the best known stories from Sunday or Sabbath School is the story of David and Goliath. The small boy pitted against a giant with just 5 small stones and a sling shot.
