The USA is said to have the largest amount of civilian gun ownership in the world. It has been estimated by the Small Arms Survey of 2007 that for every 100 persons in the US there are 89 guns. According to Gallup Inc, gun owners of America are predominately male, white, between the ages of 50 – 64 and live in the south. This statistic does not necessary match what we see on mainstream media. On television shows and in Hollywood films many gun owners are represented as young African American males ready to commit heinous crimes in heavily populated urban areas. If the truth were shown in mainstream media most gun owners would be represented as middle-aged men from the rural south. Why do these men own guns? Many say to protect their family and property, while others are hunters who kill their own meat. As a single, white, vegetarian, woman, I find firearm ownership totally unnecessary at best and down right scary in the worst-case scenario. My fear is exacerbated by the killings at Virginia Tech where I am an Associate Professor in The School Of Visual Arts. The events of April 16, 2007, have left an indelible mark on me. So much so that I have had repeated nightmares of being shot while teaching. However as I examine gun ownership and come to know people who own firearms I am developing a deeper understanding of this complex issue.

In this video, Mike Hay documents the painting and sculpture based installation No Safe Place exhibited at the Fine Arts Work Center gallery in Provincetown, Massachusetts in September 2013 by artist Diane Cionni. Artist Statement: The installation merges several separate project based artworks including drawings and digital paintings created in direct response to the shooting massacres in Aurora, Colorado and at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Gun Collection: The foil guns featured in the video are from a project in which I initiated dialogue with gun collectors in my own community seeking to understand why assault weapons are being purchased and collected in unprecedented numbers. In open discussions with friends, neighbors and acquaintances, I learned that assault weapons and other firearms were in the collections of many if not most of the people I know in my small rural Colorado community. Subsequent to numerous conversations and interviews, I borrowed weapons from their collections to make these foil hand embossed artifacts from the actual guns owned by all the people I dialogued with about gun ownership. Gunshots and Fireworks: Exploring the element of the universal pleasure of watching explosions and how that figures in the desire to collect firearms, I used digital photos as a subject to make a grid of colorful paintings depicting explosions. One set of paintings is based on photos appropriated from gun enthusiast blogs of muzzle-loaded gunshots posted by members. Intermingled are paintings from photos I took myself of fireworks in my town for a 4th of July celebration. In Smoking Gun, I considered the recent mega merchandising by the firearms industry to market guns as a luxury item similar to an IPod or designer handbag and asked myself how that might translate to a department store window display. Using materials typical in retail merchandising, I attempted to make six shotgun sculptures the subject of allure, placing them upon an acrylic pedestal filled with flashing colored LED lights below a video monitor playing a loop of a beautiful flume of smoke. The hollow backs of the foil guns are exposed in the mirror backdrop, which also catches the reflection of the viewer. The gong sounds heard in the video played continually in the gallery from Bluetooth speakers hidden in the crumpled metal debris sculpture on the corner floor of the gallery. Gongs are the most ancient instrument and long used when it is most important to get the attention of a large group of people. The composition was created in collaboration with Sam Caparelli who uses gongs and sound frequencies in her healing practice of combining ancient and contemporary healing modalities. The impetus for this installation is to elicit dialogue. The highly emotional polarity that exists between gun enthusiasts and anti-gun factions prevents everyone from finding creative solutions to the crisis of gun violence in the U.S. Ordinary, everyday people are deadlocked over the issue of gun ownership with each side is becoming more and more fortified in its stance. This hardened polarity results in the perpetuation of unnecessary tragedy and death, and bigger and bigger profits for weapons manufacturers.
