I am trying to learn about electronics, I ordered some parts so I could see how to drive a 7-segment display with a binary coded decimal with the CMOS 4511. Anyhow, I had some slides I created to illustrate this and put it together with this video. The audio video is slightly off.

Added a second 4511 chip and a second 7 segment LED display. Using the Latched Enabled (LE) pins on the 4511 I can display both with a single 4 bit bcd (Binary Encoded Decimal).

This is a simple little project that I found pretty easy to do. I should have used resistors on each pin, but I just wanted to complete this quickly. I was able to light all leds on the 7-segment display except for the left decimal point. I did have the right decimal point tied to a pin. The code I used was very quick and dirty, it simply used delays between turning the 8 pins on and off. I am sure there is an easier way to do this if I do a little research. If I were actually designing an application I probably would have the microcontroller send bcd (binary coded decimal) signals to a 4511 or some similar chip. This would require less pins.

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
