Back in March, we blogged about a recently discovered photographer, Vivian Maier. We had the chance to interview John Maloof, the man who brought her photos to the world. Since then, two years after her death, she has been recognized as one of the most fascinating street photographers of the 20th century as more and more people around the world have fallen in love with her work. Today, the Chicago Cultural Center is opening her first solo exhibition. In her honor, we bring you this slide show of some of her stunning images, along with her story told by John Maloof and renowned photographer, Mary Ellen Mark. Photographer Shadi Ghadirian was born in 1974 in Tehran, where she lives and works today. Ghadirian studied photography at Azad University, where she encountered some of the earliest works in the history of Iranian photography. These archival images sparked her own work, a series of photographs that capture the private worlds of Iranian women today, caught between eras, between tradition and modernity.  Produced by The Kitchen Sisters with Lacy Roberts and Patty Fung.

"Tooth for an Eye: A Chorography of Violence in Orleans Parish" is the latest project from Louisiana based photographer Deborah Luster. The collection, recently featured at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York, are haunting images of homicide sites in New Orleans. Luster found these sites in the local Times-Picayune newspaper and lugged her 8 x 10 Deardorff camera through the sweltering streets of New Orleans capturing what the Shaniman Gallery calls "the dizzyingly empty space at the core of violence". The sites range from those of national headline making homicides, to unknown killings in back alleyways, dive bars and the forgotten edges of town. They document a cycle of violence plaguing one of America's most beloved cities. The limited edition book can be purchased from Twin Palms Publishers: http://tinyurl.com/4nro4c6 Produced by Matt Beagle and the Kitchen Sisters for the Hidden World of Girls.

On the anniversary of Haiti’s earthquake, we bring you to the story of the Haitian Amputee Mothers Alliance (HAMA) and the photography of Sandra Wong Geroux. Sandra, who worked with the Kitchen Sisters for many years, recently travelled with nine other women to the village of Lamardelle where she documented women helped by HAMA; a program created under the non-proft organization Village of Vision for Haiti Foundation (VVHF). Faced with the pressing needs of the earthquake’s maimed survivors, HAMA plans to take in 100 mothers, 60 of whom are amputees as a result of the earthquake, as well as their children. It aims to provide leading-edge, prosthetic treatment to the amputee women, and the maintenance and support to go with it, so they can resume working and providing for their children. It will do so by leveraging upon the collaborative effort between VVHF and the Peak Prosthetics Design Team in Salt Lake City, UT. Visit: http://www.kitchensisters.org/girlstories/hama/ To listen to interviews with some of the women in the HAMA program and to view more photographs. Jason "Baby J" Drapeau was one of the fire tenders at the Isnati who kept the fires burning all day and all night for four days. His other job was singing to the girls each dawn to wake them up. It took all four days to convince Baby J to sing for us. Finally, as we were packing up to go, Jen Takes War Bonnett bribed him. One round dance song in exchange for a crab leg dinner on Saturday night at the casino in Fort Randall, South Dakota. Thanks Jen.
