We are all born explorers. My heritage is Puerto Rican and I worked in the space industry. I had big dreams. I wanted to be an astronaut years before women were even allowed to apply. I started working on my dreams of adventure and space exploration. I took pictures and videos along the way. Although I applied, I did not qualify to be selected as an astronaut. However, I eventually obtained a job supporting the space shuttle and space station programs at NASA-JSC in Houston. In the video I combine my work experiences with family photographs and research on the history of Puerto Rico.

A couple's trip by car from Gatineau, Québec to the maritime provinces in eastern Canada. Brief visit of some B&Bs, some pretty towns and some historical/heritage sites. The highlight of the trip is the famous Cabot Trail in Nova Scotia which contains incomparable natural vistas. The propensity and talent of Maritimers for traditional music is also demonstrated during the film.

I was lucky enough to share the stage with a great friend this past weekend for a collaboration poem at Soul Sessions, an amazing day of community art to benefit the new dance project Soul Lab. Hope you like the piece.

I made this in 1999 a couple years before my mom passed. I was about to leave the Video Data Bank and was thinking a lot about the history of video art and how much i loved the VDB and all it represented. So one weekend i went home and shot this with my mom. I remember having to wait until her med's kicked in so she would have the energy to perform. I love this tape but i never really distributed it. i guess it is kind of esoteric. The videos she reenacts, (if you want to call it that are John Baldessari's I am Making ARt and Baldessari Sings Lewitt, Vito Acconci Claim Excerpts and Martha Rosler's Semiotics of the Kitchen)

I wanted to do a small music video and wanted to use some old vintage footage so I found some on the internet and edited it together in the space of a morning. The idea is that the oldish man driving the train is thinking about his past: the war he was in, his mum manning the communications, his sister being part of a dancing group etc. The music was made about 5 years ago by me and only recently have I revisited it and taken away things and changed stuff. It was originally called "Your Funeral" but I've changed it to suit the video better. I'm quite chuffed with the both the video and the music. I haven't cleaned the footage I found from online. This has been just a straight forward edit without any fx applied or used. The footage was a free download and is used for a non-profit project. It is 4:3 Music Copyright © Simon Banthorpe 2011
