On October 27th, 2011 Ms. Hedy Epstein, Holocaust survivor, speaker and peace activist, and William Schneider, Ph.D., Professor of History and Director of the Medical Humanities Program at Indiana University/Purdue University, presented lectures in conjunction with the Bernard Becker Medical Library's hosting of the traveling exhibition "Deadly Medicine: Creating the Master Race." The exhibition, created by the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., highlights how physicians, geneticists, anthropologists and others in the healing professions were major participants in the Holocaust. During the Nazi era in Europe, Adolf Hitler led a broad effort using German physicians and others to racially “cleanse” European society of people seen as biologically inferior, including those with birth defects, mental illness, inherited diseases and those perceived as racial enemies of the German people. Ms. Epstein’s presentation begins at the 12 minute mark; Dr. Schneider’s presentation begins at the 1 hour, 2 minute mark.

This is the improbable story of how–after a separation of three-quarters of a century–an American family found and re-united with their Russian-Jewish relatives, without ever actually having looked for them. After all, it seemed certain that they had perished in the Holocaust or WWII. The story begins in the Bronx, NY, and the happy ending–or better, new beginning– takes place in Nuremberg, Germany, during four magical days in November 2004. The Boston Globe story can be found at: http://schechsplace.tripod.com/content/owritings/familysecret.html The historical background (in Russia and America) can be found at this JewishGen website: http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/kholmich/ 113 minutes
